McShay commentary under our pick
quote:

If Bailey’s available, I think he’s the pick here. NFL teams covet guys who get home as pass rushers, and there’s no more proven commodity in that regard than Bailey; last year, he led the nation with 14.5 sacks, was second nationally with 19.5 TFL, and had a pass rush win rate of 21.6 percent, second in the class behind Rueben Bain Jr. (23.5 percent).

He’s not a perfect prospect, though. The questions about Bailey’s run defense are legitimate—he has a linear build, gets pushed around at the point of attack too easily at times, and doesn’t always play with ideal gap discipline—but there’s enough upside to justify the selection.

While getting QB Tyler Shough a young playmaker on the perimeter opposite Chris Olave is a priority, it will have to wait until Round 2, when there should be plenty of options available from an exceptionally deep WR class.

Some of his tape breakdowns scare me. He does have bust potential. I guess at worse he can be a 3rd down rush specialist. Which is still something we need.

Yeah I definitely think he would be a huge help rushing the passer but I guess it just depends on what kind of a player the Saints are looking for.

The Saints run defense is still kind of suspec would they rather go with the more physical player ?t.

One QB in the first round definitely an outlier historically.

Yep. I really hope they take the safer and more polished Downs. He addresses the hole at Star.

If not, maybe we get lucky and can land Haulcy in the 3rd.

You’re gonna melt no matter who they pick. Let’s just get that out of the way

It really will depend on Az and Tenn. If Az goes with OL and the Titans go Bain or Love then Bailey is going to fall to 8.

If 1 QB went in this draft, it would look like fewer is normal and 2023 would be the outlier.
Only 2 last year.
2024 had 6
2023 had 3, all in the top 4
2022 only had 1, and he went 20th

Going back 10 years shows it would stick out back then
2021 had 5
2020 had 4
2019 had 3
2018 had 5
2017 had 3

I think he could come in as a 3rd down pass rush specialist behind Granderson and over time improve as a run defender

As long as Mendoza and Mauigoa go before us, we are going to get a stud drop to us at 8

I do agree that Bailey is far from a perfect prospect, but he has an ability and physical traits that a lot of payers don’t have. I posted the video below in another thread, but it’s a really good breakdown on the strengths and weaknesses of Bain and Bailey.

5. Giants: RB Jeremiyah Love
6. Browns: WR Carnell Tate
7. Commanders: LB Sonny Styles
8. Saints: Edge David Bailey
9. Chiefs: CB Mansoor Delane
10. Bengals: DS Caleb Downs
11. Dolphins: WR Makai Lemon

I’d be happy with any of these players. Styles is my preference, but I doubt he makes it to us.

Bama Boy will be drafted in the first. McShay is not a fan of him coming out for the draft, but that does not mean other teams won't take a shot. He has a ton of potential, and that won't get ignored. It doesn't mean he won't be a bust, but I think it does mean he will be drafted in the first

I usually rather Mcshay's draft as the most reasonable, but this one seems way off base.

I wouldn’t melt if they took Tate, Reese, Bain, Styles, Delane or Bailey. Bailey has elite pass rush skills, but not sure if he’s an every down player. Bain is an outlier but he has some dominating tape. Out of that group, I think those two have the highest risk of busting. But I’m fine if we picked either b/c they have shown high level production.

I’m only melting if we take Love or a Olineman or Tyson b/c of his injuries. And Love is a good player, just don’t think he needs to get picked that high or by us.

That’s an absolute steal! I know it’s not fashionable to take an OG high in the draft, but from what I’ve seen from his film, he looks like an absolute beast that could anchor a line for years to come.

Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t even be mad if we took him. I know it’s a reach, but he seems like a sure thing.
