While some might say that's excessive, protecting your skin from UV rays keeps you looking young and greatly reduces risk of certain skin cancer.

I have had skin cancer and though I’m not this bad, I do wear a big hat and apply sunblock every 20-30 min.

No it doesn’t. That’s completely 100% false. A myth that has been perpetuated and believed by the masses without even questioning it.

One of my good clients is a retired cancer doc. He said the sun being bad for you is one of the biggest myths. He said that exposure to sun is great for your skin, it is only bad if you are going to be out long enough to cause burning/damage.

What about whole cancer or 2%?

Who tends to have the most and worst skin cancers?
A. Individuals who avoid excessive sun exposure and wear sun protection.
Or
B. Old, bald baws who spent large proportions of their lives outside and have never worn sun protection in their lives.
It’s unequivocally B.
They also look much older.
It’s literally plain to see just casually existing in the society that it is not a myth. No in depth research or special credentials required.
Melanoma can be a bit of an exception in some ways, but this is not denied by the medical community.
ETA that none of this is to say I am defending the loony dermatologists vacationing in Hawaii

I wish I used sunscreen more or rash guards. Definitely have some sun damage.

So, UV light is not a potential danger to skin and eyes?

Nut balls. Back in my day you just burned and pealed. It was the souvenir for having fun.

They treat skin cancer all day

They're a lively bunch.

The issue with doctors like this is that they’ve allowed their careers treating cancers and personally seeing bad cases to frighten them to a degree where they fail to think about actual risk in a given situation. It’s common.
How long are they going to be there? A few days? A week at most?
Wear sun protection. Take breaks. But for God sakes enjoy your vacation.
People like this have a hard time believing bad things can happen to them if they do ALL the right things ALL the time. They are irrationally rigid and excessive. And wrong.

The thing about skin cancer is you will most likely get it after 50. So for most of your life you think it is silly to concern yourself about it because the sun only gives you a tan. I've had two basal cell carcinomas and my wife a melanoma and squamous cell cancer. And for most of the past forty years she has not spent excessive time in the sun. If dermatologists lather up and wear protective clothing, it means something. And for those women who took to tanning beds in their teens, they are doomed. Dermatologists offices are not so much filled with pimple faced teens, it is mostly old people getting stuff cut off their skin.
