Because this has worked so well for the NBA!
He thinks the NFL could get an 18-game season by mandating players only play 17 games.
What an idiot.

Why not just go to a 40 game schedule?

I love football as much as the next guy, but too much football can be not a good thing.
16 games was plenty. 17 is pushing it. 18 is too many, especially if this clown show crap goes on about "load management".

It's a dumb take to anyone who looks at the NFL as a sports league.
If you are an owner or television network and you think the plan can make you a couple extra nickels you would think it's a great idea.
Fans look at plenty ideas and immediately and correctly say that's stupid. But the owners only ask, will it make us more money. If yes, they will do it.

They won't stop at 18. The TV contracts became so big compared to everything else they're warping the entire sport.
After decades of stability they started adding playoff spots and regular season games. They weren't going to stop it at just one ever.
The NFL isn't a serious sports league anymore. It's a television production and they're trying to produce more episodes.

What would they do if a team needs the last game to maybe make the playoffs but it’s mandated that the star players have to sit out despite being healthy the first 17 games

while a dumb idea by Florio, if it was enacted teams wouldn't save their stars from the game off till the last game. They would work it out earlier in the season to where the won't run into that issue.
But doesn't matter this won't happen

Well, then, you shouldn’t have waited until the last week. But unless he’s saying you have to designate a healthy player, the chances that anybody but QBs will be banged up at some point of the year and that will just take care of itself. I hate this idea, by the way, I just don’t know how much different it would be in reality. Except at QB. I’m against it, but the “when to sit your QB” piece would be an interesting strategy to see play out. I wonder if it would affect the backup QB market. Now, you try to get the best one you can incase your starter gets hurt. But they’re just insurance policies that you hope don’t have to ever play. But with this rule, you’d know they’d be starting at least 1 game. Out of 18, would that drastically increase their value and the top guys’ market values would shoot through the roof? Or is 1/18 not enough to really affect anything all that drastically? Again, I hope we never find out.

i mean we literally have this with an 18 game week schedule with all teams having a bye week.

How about we just get rid of Thursday night games and stop making people play on 4/5 days of rest? That seems like the smarter play here.

If you have to load manage, you are playing too many games.

while a dumb idea by Florio,
Sad thing is, it may not be his idea. This idea was floated around a few years ago when the league was going to 17 games, they wanted 18 games and settled for 17. I do not recall who first floated out the idea (maybe it was him), but it was a discussion a few years ago. One of the reasons it fell flat on its face was the player's association was pushing for larger rosters and everyone dresses on game day.
If you want "load management" include a 2nd bye week and the only teams eligible to play on Thursday nights are the ones that did not play the prior weekend (a player cannot play a game within 5 days of a previous game)

Remove it from nba and place on linemen rbs and lbs in the nfl.

16 was such a perfect amount of games. I still don’t see why they didn’t just expand the season to 18 games with 2 byes for each team. You’d likely get better football and you’d still have plenty of games to cover television weekly.

And why not just spread bye weeks over 2-4 weeks in the middle of the season instead of between weeks 5-14? Seems like there are quite a few things they could do to just give players more rest.

I’m so sick and tired of executives and commissioners completely ruining the sports that we’ve all grown to love - all because of the pursuit of more fricking money
They’ve ruined college football, the NFL, and the NBA and they aren’t gonna stop until every fricking penny is squeezed out of everything

A 16-game schedule was ideal.
Besides the extra wear and tear, a 17-game schedule is dumb because the schedules are uneven, unless they make every team play an international game (which they're already playing almost 10, just make it 16) and stop designating a home/away team for it.
An 18-game schedule, while inevitable, is only wanted for money. It has no other benefit.
What's funny is that they had two bye weeks for a season in the 1990s when they still had 16 games. Any move to 18 games should require a second bye week or the Players' Union is worthless.
ETA: Florio is an idiot. Besides competition issues, what about a player that needs the last game for an incentive bonus? I doubt the Union will go for that either.
