Dam, used to be just a few bucks or so. I went to renew my vehicle registration on LA Wallet of which the registration is $60.00 and the online fee is $23.00. I quickly shut it down. Writing a check and mailing it in.

The online payment fee was just $2.00 for me.

Don’t worry that money out of your pocket goes to helping make sure your publicly elected officials fly first class, limousine ride service and stay in the most luxurious hotels. You should be thankful your overlords allow you to keep any of what you earn.

I'm glad I saw this thread...I realized last month that I hadn't renewed mine, so I did it online (it wasn't $60 though). But I don't think I've gotten it in the mail yet.
I need to call someone and check on that.

unless I missed something in the renewal about, $3 is the service charge I paid last week. This post was edited on 3/18/26 at 12:25 pm

There's a link in LA Wallet that will take you to the OMV website which only has a $3 fee.

I always go through the website to get the $3.00 fee then tip $8 or so so I don't feel bad about avoiding the $23.

People completely missed that you said LA Wallet. You are correct. The fee is $23 for the convenience of using the app. You can go online (to the actual state site) and it’s only $3.

Wow thats quite the scam for using the app. Maybe if you go through the app they have to give apple a cut so they raise fees to offset that?

The state doesn't actually own the app the developer does. They are a Baton Rouge company called Envoc so most of those fees goes to them.

Just curious, did you pay a state sales tax when you purchased the vehicle? Some states don't but then whack you on yearly registration.

Don't go through the third party site. It's only a few bucks to use the DMV and you don't have to go in.

$124 plus $3 fee for my wife’s car

No it isn't. Source: Me; just renewed one.
That "free" app? I wonder how they make money?

why are registration amounts different across the board for everyone responding?

I think when this has come up before someone said the charge going thru the Wallet is part of developer not charging the state for developing the App and getting back its costs or something like that.
It seemed like a messed up thing for the state to do while pushing the usage of the LAwallet app.
