Don't Need to Work, But Want To

*DISCLAIMER* This does NOT apply to me
We met a woman that was celebrating her 43rd birthday, last night. Since practically no one is "from" SWFL, we started chatting and she said she hailed from the Bronx and had been down here for about 8 years. When I asked what she did for a living, she laughed and said "Well, I am married to a rather wealthy man, so I don't technically have to work. That being said, I work part time at our nearby Dollar General."
She was proud of her store, and said "I know it sounds embarassing, but I actually love it."
I thought of people I have met, over the years, especially retirees, who find some job you would think of a high-schooler doing, to keep themselves engaged.
If you didn't have to work for money, what would you do, to pass the time? A job, hobby, charity work?

as you said, probably something a HS/college kid might do. A menial, probably boring, but ZERO STRESS job to keep my hands busy and get me out of the house.
definitely NOT dollar general though considering the clientele you'd deal with all day. That doesn't sound low stress at all.

In general, I loathe people. I'm certainly not going to sign up for something retail and deal with idiots all day.
I would wood work, sell some small furniture items, cut people's grass for free. I like 3d printing and designing stuff, so maybe expand that into a 3d print and CNC shop.
ETA: outside option of going back to giving baseball lessons but with the current travel ball expectations from unrealistic parents that would get old quick.

When I was 18 I worked at a gas station. One of the grouchy ladies who worked the morning shift would say the same thing about having a rich husband. I always thought it was BS. Maybe the guy is making decent, or even pretty good money, but if he was truly rich there’s just no way.
That’s my take on this… but maybe that dollar general is nicer than my gas station

I've done plenty of volunteering with church and schools... aside from that, I always thought it'd be fun and educational to work in an auto-parts store.
When I'm finished with my youngest, I'll probably do that for awhile.

My wife doesn't have to work, but works retail. She loves working on the merchandising end. She also provides health insurance, which is very nice. I had a little over $1.0m in medical expenses last year, but only paid out about $500 (the infusion provider gave me a card that paid my co-pay).

At the same gas station I witnessed an interaction between a 40 year old chubby rich white guy and an older Hispanic man, who clearly had come to know each other from going to the same gas station
the guy said he played golf for a living. “Must be nice”
That is definitely what I would do if I was really rich enough to not work. Just play golf all day, and other stuff for fun. If I wanted to feel like I was giving back then I would start a charity or something.

I have been telling people for years that once I retire I want to pick up two night shifts a week working the grill at Waffle House. I figure it will be good for some stories and fun. Realistically, I probably won't last a year doing it but I have to try.

If you love what you do its not really work but if it was me, I'd hike all the time .... I'd become a walking Forrest gump. I'd walk places just to say I did. Like walk to the beach and drink.

Hobbies, plus probably some combination of expanding the number of charity/policy/governmental boards I'm on with a low hour adjunct professorship.

something in recreation.
but, truth is, people are getting worse and worse every year. not sure if I could deal with the public. it's driving my wife into retirement early, I think. just sorry people. all races. maybe it's just this county.

I’ve heard of some retirees working in a particular section at Lowe’s or Home Depot helping people gather with what they’ll need for their projects. Sounds pretty good.

A buddy's dad retired, and has a ton of money. He got bored being at home all the time and took a part time job at a local pharmacy. Now he's running the place full time. Some people just like to work.
Me, I'd like to work at the Aquarium in some capacity.

I was born on a Sunday. By Thursday I had me a job.
I plan to work as long as I can. I’ll shift to something more beneficial, and I am very aware that I need to get out of the way so younger folks can work. So I’ll take a job nobody wants.

1) o smell her BS from here. No one used to being around money would regularly go to, let alone, work at a DG.
2) what I’m doing now.
