The 98th annual Academy Awards drew 17.86 million viewers on ABC and Hulu, which makes it the least-watched Oscars telecast since 2022. The number is down 9% from last year’s 19.7 million viewers, which had been a five-year high for the telecast.
The telecast averaged a 3.92 rating among adults 18-49, down from last year’s 4.54 but up from 2024’s 3.82 rating. Despite this year’s dip, the 98th Academy Awards now rates as the No. 1 primetime entertainment telecast of the 2025-2026 season, according to Disney.
The declines for Sunday night’s broadcast, which was hosted by Conan O’Brien, matches similar dips seen by other major awards shows this winter, with the Golden Globes down 6% (8.66 million viewers) in January and the Grammys down 6% (14.4 million viewers) in February.
ABC also reported that social impressions were up +42.4% this year (184,314,3702) and Academy social platforms were up to 21.6 million this year vs. 19.7 million last year, including more than 129 million video views throughout the night.

I have zero desire to watch that crap. They don't even honor the best movies or actors anymore. It's either DEI or lifetime achievement/comeback participation trophies for actors who've never won one.
And that's before you get to the lecturing and virtue signaling. I'll stick to watching sports. Less of that.

I'll indirectly "defend" the Oscars and point out that most of the decline isn't their fault.
All these award shows across the board have completely cratered the past 20-30 years.
Simply put, award shows are absolute shite TV. People watched it in large numbers in the past primarily because of lack of better options.
The decline is even worse when you factor in population growth. At its peak 30% of America watched the Oscars. Now it's less than 5%.
The mono-culture of the post WW2 era has been shattered and culture and entertainment are way more fragmented now. Lotta interesting discussion on that topic.

Down 9% in one year is a cliff fall.

I'd question who are the 17.9m watching that shite

Haven't watched in over 10 years and don't plan on ever watching it again. Fart sniffers and virtue signaling douchebags are not my cup of tea. I used to religiously watch the Oscars when I was in film school and was working in the industry, but in the early 2000's enough frickery with who won and who lost started to take hold and then the political nonsense cemented it for me.

It’s not even a political thing, I’ve just never understood the appeal of watching award shows.

That has to be mostly people on X roasting the shite out of the telecast.

What type of work did you do?

I was on the Production side. PA to a Production Coordinator and then to a Production Manager. Mostly TV but a few movies. Got tired of the crazy hours and low pay.

I'm honestly shocked that it drew 18 million watchers. That seems insanely high to me these days. I would've guess 10-12 million, 15 max.

Politics and virtue signaling is bad enough but really just as I got older and entered the real world I stopped wanting to see the actual actors and just stuck to the characters. Once you're a certain age watching people celebrate themselves is ridiculous. Especially when most are immensely less talented than who you grew up with.

This. I don't feel the need to watch a bunch of rich, pretentious assholes who pretend to be other people for a living lecture me on how I should be living my life.

From the viewership chart quoted:
1996: 45 million
2006: 36 million
2016: 34 million
2026: 18 million
I'm amazed at how successful they've been at what they set out to accomplish: appeal to the roughly 50% of the audience that tilts left of center.
Things essentially went crazy between the early 10s and 2016. The media and entertainment fragmentation was in full meltdown by the time of the 2016 presidential election.
Well, they have the audience they said they wanted. It reduced almost exactly by 50% over the last 20 years.
