You’re close. There was some kind of sexual hold she had over him. I haven’t gone completely down the rabbit hole on the subject, but from why I’ve seen and read it’s been strongly implied it was butt stuff. She was an anal freak.

The more history IU read the more I realize that the British upper crust have more loyalty to their old school chums, than they do to Great Britain. Many of them knew Kim Philby was a Soviet spy, it was an open secret, but they refused to turn against a school chum.
