I keep hearing people in the non lsu media claim he lost his 2 best players. DJ yes.. but Jalen reed was not the second best player on this team!! He wasn’t even a starter when he went down! The dude is not better than nwoku or Max.. stop with the excuse’s because the guy is “nice”

I like Reed but he was raw/green before the injury. High ceiling players get catapulted to the ceiling in the minds of those who need to shape a narrative. At the time of injury, he was a middle tier SEC player. Those are the facts, supported my data/stats

What was our record against P5 teams with DJ Thomas? It was 3-6. Thomas is a good player, but this was not a tournament team even with Thomas in the lineup.

They started the excuse he lost his 2 best players that's why he couldn't win,it's all horse shite with McClown! Right with Thomas he played I believe 3 or 4 SEC games they got blown out by Mississippi st. At home in one of them and yes they won 1 sec. Game with they south Carolina in ot. Stop the fricking excuses and Fire his can't coaching arse!

The reality is that Reed ended up not being a big loss, considering the post-production from the guys who stayed healthy. Reed's primary contribution would have been to provide some depth and spread the minutes around.
Thomas was a big loss, but he didn't really help on defense, where this team really struggled. Also, the offensive drop-off wasn't as bad as expected after losing Thomas, as other players picked up the scoring.
Even with a healthy Thomas and Reed, this team still finishes near the bottom of the conference.

The thing that anyone spouting that excuse doesnt want to say, is that even when dj thomas played, the couple games in sec play, our defense got abused by the likes of south carolina. The defense was horrible regardless of who was on the floor. Maybe they win 2-3 more at most with dj. So 6-12 sec record? Cool i guess. Still not good enough

That is a great excuse and all until you look at the harsh reality of the fact that if you take our top 2-3 guys on the team and see where they would fit into some of the top teams in the league and they would be anywhere from the 6th man to 9th or 10th man up on some of the top tier SEC teams. We have to improve the talent on our roster. Need a coach that is better at evaluating talent and bringing it in to compete at this level.

I dont think it can be completely overlooked he lost Thomas + Reed for most of the SEC conference play, but it should not be close to a reason to keep him around either considering hes still never made the tournament here in 4 years.
Even if you flip every close SEC conference game (which is not an exact science by any means) we had we're 8-10 instead of 3-15 and likely not in the tournament due to a meh OOC with only notable wins over UCF and SMU who are basically bubble teams right now.
It should never be acceptable here to miss the tournament 4 years in a row for 1 coach. Especially when McMahon wasn't facing crippling sanctions or something. He lost what, 1 scholarship for his first couple years here? Yeah, thats not the reason we havent been decent at all the past 4 years. Simply didnt bring in enough good players, or coach up the ones he had to any real notable success.

Losing Reed hurt more than you're giving it credit for. This team was really missing a guy that had his scoring ability in the paint. He was averaging 10 and 6 before going out and his absence forced Nwoko and Tamba to play a lot more than we'd like them to. Each of them took on an extra 5-10 minutes per game, and I think it was evident that we were missing a guy that could isolate going to the basket. The frontcourt depth the overall size could have been a real strength of this roster had Reed been healthy.
With all of that being said, it is not a good enough excuse for going 3-15 back to back years. I believe Reed and Dedan's full season presence could have been worth a few extra wins, but ultimately, we would've probably been 9-9 at best, which is still a very low ceiling when we're considering what the best case scenario for a program like ours should be.

Reed may not have been a top 2 player, but he was our best low post player by far. He wasn’t starting early in the season to let him gradually get back after a serious injury. He would have started as the year progressed.

Maybe… but going up against sec front courts I’m not sure how effective would be coming off that original injury. He helps the team but not enough to say McMahon should get another opportunity because of it

1) Reed was unquestionably the second most improtant player on the team when he went down. If you can't see that, you don't know basketball or you weren't watching LSU basketball for the last couple of years.
2) That being said, losing Reed and Thomas is NOT an excuse for how bad this team was. Period. The coaching was bad - the players were consistently lackluster across the board and were fundamentally unsound in every way.
3) McMahon inherited a Sh4tburger of a program from everyone's hero, Wade. Wade ruined the program to a point that it was going to take years to rebuild. That is SIMPLY A FACT. While that also does not excuse McMahon from how poor his teams have been in every aspect of the game, it must be said in McMahon's defense.
4) I am one of the few who would not be completely pi$$ed off if McMahon is given another year to bring the program around. I would also be happy if they fired McMahon - but ONLY if they hire a PROVEN GREAT coach (not Will Wade). We cannot go backward and we cannot allow the program to stay in a tailspin.
Either give McMahon one more shot or spend the money and get the BEST coach we can (that is, after all, what Verge promised to do when he hired Kiffin).

He had program saving DJ Thomas for Mississippi State, logged 28 minutes and got run out of the PMAC by the worst MSU team in the last 10 years.

Reed when healthy was a matchup problem for other bigs. His ability to hit the 3 would cause his big to have to come out to guard him which opened up the lane. he also had the capability and aggressiveness to take his man off the dribble and he played solid defense. He was a solid big off the bench to start and who knows how he would have progressed as the season went on and his leg got stronger . And this mantra of DJ being 3-6 against P4 teams other than the Texas Tech game where no one gave him any support, he produced and was probably playing injured anyway which is why he was pulled in the Miss St game and only played 17 minutes in the FL game. He went for 18pts and 5 assists against Ark on the road so yes he was a good SEC PG. Having both of those players probably gets us to 7 - 10 wins which make them a tournament team. The 2 A&M losses and the first SC loss and 2 KY losses are all probable wins. And there may have been an upset of Vandy and AL at home. Tenn, TX and GA all could have been different outcomes. Hell we gave Tenn all they wanted with Mckinnon out also. That's about 40 ppg on the sidline at Tenn.

Just another built in McExcuse.

He was on an early season minute restriction due to coming off injury. He was fully expected to be a top 2 player and major contributor. The reason coach scheduled such an easy first month was to get Reed ready for the season.
