The US Military is getting its first new hand grenade since Vietnam

The US Army just cleared the "M111 Offensive Hand Grenade" for full release. It is the first new offensive grenade since the M67 in 1968. The M67 is a "fragmentation" grenade that relies on the explosion to create shrapnel and propel that shrapnel out to kill enemies. The new M111 relies simply on the blast overpressure to do the job.
The rationale is that during urban combat and fighting inside of a structure, the frag grenades can become dangerous to its users and/or friendly forces in the area. The new grenade relying on just the overpressure is supposed to be better for close quarters fighting. That is the theory, anyway. Seems to me that the blast overpressure to be effective. It seems to me like overpressure inside a building is still gonna be just as dangerous to the users as fragmentation weapons. But ive never been fighting goat herders in a mud hut either, so I dont really know.
What are the thoughts of the board? Especially those kf you that have been over there and thrown an M67 into a room before entering. Did you worry about catching some shrapnel before you went through the door? Do you think these new grenade will be as effective?
Short video I found on the new grenade:

Don't fix it, if it's not broken...
Side Note: Hollywood has the best grenades... Blows up entire buildings with huge flames....
In my mind, this is the best Hand Grenade...

Might change Bruno Mars’ pledge from 2010?

Hmm. How friendlies are to be 100% safe (we have ears, too) is interesting.
quote:
Grenade overpressure refers to the high-pressure shock wave generated by the explosion of a grenade, which can cause significant damage to structures and injuries to people nearby. This overpressure can lead to effects such as shattered windows and serious injuries, particularly to the ears and lungs, depending on the intensity of the blast.

Me thinks that if proximity is an issue, you shouldn't be lobbing grenades in the first place.

We had a guy from Idaho in basic that throw them damn near all the way across the pit.

this explosive news is offensive.

I don't know crap about hand grenades except that all i've ever heard from vets is that they're not really all that effective and don't make near the boom they are portrayed to make in movies. Maybe this new version will be better?

Yes. VAST difference between movie grenades and real ones.
These are more like a souped up flash bang. Knock the people inside the room down and stun them real good. Then you are free to go in and give them some ballistic attention.

And no more bayonets. Found this out the other day.

The German stick grenades of WW1 and WW2 were offensive had grenades so this isn’t anything new. I’d imagine that these will not replace the M67 but will be used when there is potential for the specific application.
I seem to remember a prototype being pushed that allowed the user to screw on additional grenades to the bottom of the casing to give some extra boom when needed.

This was my thinking as well. Especially if its like an apartment complex where you are already inside rather than being outside of a small building and throwing it inside before entering. Won't the guy who threw it get the same (I know it wouldn't be exactly the same just due to being farther away) blast pressure since he is already inside the structure as well?

So basically a really powerful flash bang? It's probably going to be used more for disorientation than to actually kill/injure anyone.

I mean what's wrong with a upgrade if its ours?
A higher pressurized grenade that sends shrapnel everywhere probably says fafo

Yes. Flash bangs are very useful in entering and clearing a room.

Interesting. Never heard of that, but you're right. SOCOMstarted using them back in 2010 according to wiki:
quote:
In 2010, US SOCOM began fielding the Mk 21 Mod 0[11] Scalable Offensive Hand Grenade that delivers blast effects. The grenades are "stackable," meaning up to three can be connected to increase blast power.
Thats pretty damn cool.

The German "potato masher" of WWII was a grenade that relied on the concussive blast effect.

That hand grenade was the cause and solution to a lot of my problems during my 20s

So throwing hand grenades is dangerous. Who knew?
