My son is trying to catch crawfish in big roadside ditches and places like that. (We used to do that some when I was little but don't remember much.)

Any tips? Like a good time of the day to go? What kind of places are good? Use beef melt for bait or something else?

Thanks.

Try Ramah when the water comes up on the levee. Been 20 years, but it was good with kids.

Ditches on both sides of hwy 1 when you turn north off hwy 190. Those hold green crawfish (nice sized tails but small claws). Any kinda meat will work as bait. Hell, I’ve caught them with bologna slices clothepinned in the set net before.

Did at Ramah in college once. We caught 4. Crawfish, not pounds.

Peddled many a mile with 12 drop nets and a pole with a nail in the end around the southside of Ellick. Used chicken necks most of the time, berld em in an aluminum pot in regular water no seasoning and thought it was great

Yep. If you know where some of the bar pits are between the levee and the river those usually have some nice bugs. We used to hit one off river road, straight across the road from the south gate (gate 2) at what used to be Honeywell in Geismar. I think it is now Nutrien

I used to crawfish on the side of river road between Brightside and LSU when I was in school. Usually caught enough to boil on the stove in my apartment. My friends thought I was crazy.

When I was a kid we went one time when they were crawling all over the road and pilled up in every ditch culvert, I can't remember what caused it but must have been a flood .

There were thousands smashed in the road from cars running over them.

We loaded up several wash tubs full in no time

Crazy

I remember that phenomenon too. Late 80’s and haven’t seen it again. While we were picking the crawfish out the yard, my grandfather (born in the 20’s) said he remember hearing the old folks telling stories of it happening probably around 1900? 80 year event, I guess?

We used to go along the ICWW in Belle river when water was in the trees. But you have to pick up your nets every time a barge would come by, learned that the hard way.

Cat island can be good, but you need a permit.

not sure where you're located but can crawfish off the side of Hwy 61 just south of the I-10 interchange down to St James Boat Club...

Saw it firsthand on 91 July ne afternoon, a gazilliom crossing the road alone with 10# frogs. Was flying out so couldn’t stop and gather a coonass bounty.

Catch crawfish at Sherburne WMA South Farm area
Bring an ATV if you have it
IF not, a small wagon would work, gravel roads all the way back

Great article on beginning crawfishing https://hollierondabayou.blogspot.com/2018/06/a-beginners-guide-to-crawfishing.html

We used to do this a lot when I was a kid. I typically used fish heads for bait…they have enough bones to stay in the net for a long time.

I remember it being much hotter weather than this, though. Hot as balls!
