Participants in the 2026 Los Angeles Marathon have the option to only run 18 miles—and still receive a finisher medal, race officials announced this week. Organizers are projecting a warm, sunny day across the point-to-point course from Dodger Stadium to Century City, with temperatures starting in the mid-50s around the 7:00 a.m. start and climbing into the mid-to-upper 70s by midday, with a high in the low 80s. In response, the McCourt Foundation, which organizes the race, says runners will have an additional choice on race day: marathoners who are “having a tough day” can take a turn at mile 18, head to the finish line early, and still collect a finisher medal.
.

Sad. Very typical California.
I am not a good runner in the warmer weather, but that’s my problem.

While California sucks, 18 miles of running is a haul.

How long is the actual marathon? No, I'm not clicking on a blind link.

Edit: I check the thread this morning and see I've gotten 29 down votes and counting. At first I was confused as to why the hell so many people disliked it, but I guess perhaps the way it reads,I didn't make myself perfectly clear.

California sucks. Handing out participation medals is gay. They should not receive finishing medals if they don't finish. I did not elaborate on my point, and seeing how it reads to y'all, I see why folks down voted.

All I was saying is 18 miles is a haul. It is. I'm not saying they should be rewarded for doing that, and not the full 26. I was saying I'm not going to shite on someone who runs 18 miles. I'm always going to shite on California.

26.2 miles
Trust me, 18 miles is NOT a marathon. The absolute hardest part of a marathon are those last few miles. At mile 18, runners aren’t even near their breaking point. Usually hits around mile 22 or so, knowing you still have 4 miles or so to go. Test of mental strength and physical strength.

In my option, this is probably to mitigate people pushing themselves to much and getting injured or having heat stroke which really causes an issue for the event

Imagine running around the track around a football field 105 times. Then imagine if, after 74 laps, someone told you you could be done if you want instead of doing the next 26 laps.

This guy runs. That's like saying benching 275 is the same as 350, or dunking 8 feet is the same as 10. The last 20-25 percent is the whole point.

The battle of marathon happened. The Athenians won. So they sent a runner to tell the Greeks in Athens that they won but the Persian fleet was still running. The distance between Athens and Marathon is exactly how long a Marathon is

Change your opinion. What if folks "pushing themselves too much" to get the 18th mile for the medal?

Get in or get out.

Will the sticker they self righteously put on the rear windshield of their car say 26.2 or 18?

There are thousands of marathons every year. Many in much more difficult climates than what's expected here.

Try to rationalize all you want, it's pure pussiness.
