What should she have done differently?

Sure, she fricked Ted, but goddamn, Walt was such a piece of shite. She was put in impossible situation after impossible situation, and is a lot more of a badass than a lot of BB fans would have you believe.

We hate Skyler for the same reason we hate kids in these shows. It has nothing to do with reality. We want to see Walt become a drug kingpin and say cool stuff like "I am the danger!". We want to see other badass druglords be the foil to this and set up interesting conflicts. We don't want to see the lead get derailed by family life at home.

Having said all that. I think Skyler worked in the show, and I am glad the writers put her in. I am just giving my theory on why she gets so much hate.

But even once Walt finally caved and gave her what she always wanted, she wasn't satisfied with that

It is possible to hate Skylar and also think Walt is a huge piece of shite. Those aren't mutually exclusive.

We literally just finished a re-watch of BB last night. My overriding thought throughout the whole show was I really don't hate/blame Skylar nearly as much as I did the first go around. It was really weird but I kept saying "I just don't blame her" the whole time.

Walt was a huge POS and we shouldn't hate Skyler but we do.

Vince could have done a WAY better job of making her a totally sympathetic innocent victim...but he didn't.

It's the pity birthday handjob that always gets me. It shows that not only was Walt weak, she was also emasculating him.

I would have liked to see her come alive with him once he gained success and power. That confidence he had would have been palpable, and alluring. That she never saw it, and instead nailed her boss, is one of the key reasons I dislike the character.

Basically, Walt had an arc. I'm not sure she did.

She was complicit in Walt's meth dealing business and everything that went with it. She stupidly gave away the money to Benake.

I gay your point, but if we’re applying real life to the show, Skyler found herself in a horrible situation. Walt developed into a deranged power crazy drug lord who put his family at risk…

Without Skyler's character, Walt is just a meth Tony Montana. Skyler, while flawed, keeps Walt's character grounded to the person he used to be, because she still sees him as the kind hearted science teacher. She's unable to see the different man he has become. In a way, she's the most essential piece of the vibe of the show.

Then again, I know people who don't think Walt is the bad guy. The whole point is Walt's transition from good guy to villian. The show is literally titled Breaking Bad.

Hot take: I think Anna Gunn might’ve done the best acting job on the whole show.

People got so wrapped up in hating Skyler that they stopped separating the character from the actress. It got so bad she was getting actual death threats in real life

I was somewhat ambivalent on Skyler until

no "but", she was dead to me at that point

And gave him Walt's money.

She was a piece of shite and you're a piece of shite for not thinking she was a piece of shite.

The thing that bothers me on rewatch is that I think Walt could have gotten a way better job. If he's as brilliant as he is depicted in the show, there's no way his only fallback job would be shitty HS teacher, even with a knocked-up wife.

Skylar was put through the wringer in the timeline of the show, which is... what, a year or two at most? Her character went through the following phases:

1. My husband Walt is an incredibly intelligent and capable chemist who threw away his chance to be wealthy because his feelings got hurt and now he has basically given up on life and works as a high school teacher and can't support us on his own so I have to work a side hustle even though I'm pregnant just to pay the bills.

2. My husband Walt has cancer and is going to die!

3. We had a baby!

4. My husband Walt beat the cancer and isn't going to die!

5. Ok, so Walt is better now, but he's acting weird and clearly hiding something so he is almost certainly seeing someone else.

6. ...and in addition to probably seeing someone else he's also hanging out with someone I know to be involved in drugs, so he is probably using drugs too.

7. Oooook, so my husband Walt who I've been married to for years and always thought was kind of a sad sack isn't using drugs after all, he's fricking manufacturing and selling them, and I think he might also have killed some people so I have no idea who this person is or what he might be capable of if he thinks I might turn him in. Oh, and also we are rich beyond my wildest dreams.

I'm not saying she made all the right decisions because of course she didn't, but that's a hell of a ride to be taken on by your spouse.

Right, and I think this is true. Which makes her lack of character arc even more unforgivable. What and how did she develop over the course of the show?

doesn't excuse her giving him a disinterested handjob for his birthday in one of the early episode
