The show starts off by showing her giving an unenthusiastic hand job to Walter for his birthday. Not even tits out. The writers wanted you to hate her.

it always amazes me that with the following this show has with people meticulously overanalyzing every single scene and stillshot over 6 seasons, people STILL cite this as a reason to hate skyler while completely and totally ignoring the fact that she truly had zero other choice.

Ted was a massive dumbfrick that owed the IRS an enormous amount of money in addition to having two separate sets of books and doing a ton of other illegal shite. They were going to begin snooping around and one of the first people they'd heavily look into was skyler considering she kept the books would know everything. They woudl obviously look into her personal affairs as well and ya know there's that whole pesky "living with a drunk kingpin and suddenly having millions of extra dollars lying around" thing. If the IRS starting poking around, they were done. Finished. The only way for skyler to get the IRS to frick off and thereby SAVE HER FAMILY, was to take the crawlspace money adn give it to ted to pay the IRS.

I have zero tolerance whatsoever for cheating so you'll never hear me give her a pass for that. But of the handful of reasons to actually dislike her, taking that money doesn't even register on the list.

We literally just finished a re-watch of BB last night. My overriding thought throughout the whole show was I really don't hate/blame Skylar nearly as much as I did the first go around. It was really weird but I kept saying "I just don't blame her" the whole time.
I definitely find myself hating her less every re-watch. It's mostly that she's very annoying. But every re-watch I find myself thinking she wasn't as bad as I remembered.

This. She was a huge twat from the beginning.

It is possible to hate Skylar and also think Walt is a huge piece of shite. Those aren't mutually exclusive.

They were both terrible people who raised an annoying son and deserved the bad things that came their way as a result of their own actions.

I used to think this as well. She really put in a shitty situation by Walt. And I don't know if I'd have done anything different.

But every time I do a re-watch of BB, I'm reminded in the very first episode that she has no respect for her husband whatsoever. She knows they struggle to pay their bills but is content to lounge around in those fricking kimonos while Walt goes off to earns his piddly $40K. And of course she considers herself a contributor by selling shite knick knacks on Ebay at a whopping 1% profit. She henpecks the shite out of his about credit card bills and turkey bacon. And she tops this with that half-arse hand job on his birthday while she's got her macbook on her lap watching her shite knick knacks go from $9 to $9.01.

I do end up feeling pretty sympathetic for most of what she has to go through and how her life ends up but lets be real. She wasn't ever really on Walt's team to begin with.

All that said--Watler White is a piece of shite and the worst kingpin possible. In reality, he would've never gotten past S1. Tucco would've killed him on site.

Maybe that was the point. None of them were good people.

In television we dont really care about moral compasses. Just dont be obnoxious or annoying. You can be pleasantly awful and we will like you. If you are a raging count and nagging bitch while the shite you do is technically right, we will hate you cause its unpleasant to watch.

fricking Ted is not the reason people hate Skylar

She is a genuinely horrible wife and person

Walt also being bad does not make her good

We want Walt to be bad, because he's basically a broken man in the beginning, and then gets slammed with a cancer diagnosis. To the audience, Walt has earned his bad arse drug dealer arc. What arc does Skyler earn? She's an overbearing, domineering wife who has basically ruined this man (he was a successful chemist before meeting her), then she's only there to get in the way of all the fun WE as the audience want him to have. You have to be miserable (or a woman) to really side with Skyler.

She was a controlling bitch from the start. Have people forgotten during the intervention Walt saying he doesn't feel like he has a say in his life choices? Who do you think he's talking about?...obviously he's referring to Skylar. Walt clearly is a bad person but so is Skylar.

IMO her infidelity helped push his crazy level.

Prior he was just a poor schmuck that had life beat him down.

Piss poor business decision and because a depressed teacher.

Handicapped son

Cancer.

Right, and I think this is true. Which makes her lack of character arc even more unforgivable. What and how did she develop over the course of the show?

I think it’s pretty accurate for a person to NOT have much of an “arc” after going through all that shite

Walt was a terrible person long before he got involved in the drug business. He had all the ability in the world to give his family a better life, but he chose not to because he was throwing a lifelong bitch fit about what happened with Gray Matter. You're telling me that after co-founding a super successful and groundbreaking chemical company, he couldn't get a job as an industrial chemist with some other big firm? He could have easily been bringing in several hundred thousand a year, but instead he decided to become a schlub and it's pretty clear he did it to make a point with Elliot and Gretchen about how they ruined his life and to make everyone else feel sorry for him because of how badly he had supposedly been treated. He manipulated everyone into seeing him as the victim of what others had done to him when in reality he had done it all to himself. He was a shitty husband and father who fricked his family over to make a point that wasn't even true, and he better have enjoyed the hell out of that half-assed birthday handjob because it was half an arse more of one than he deserved. Skylar should have left him long before the point at which the show started.

There was no point in the show at which was Walt not a horrible manipulative a-hole, and if you think there was then you've been manipulated by him, too.

Didn't his old business partner offer him a shitload of money to work for him? In a legit job? With life insurance, full benefits, etc? And he turned it down out of pride? Or am I misremembering the story line?
