Let's hear it for affordability!

This coming along with a budget that proposes to tax even dog walking fees. Ye gads!

Legislators in Virginia could see a nearly 300% pay increase if an amendment added to the budget by Democrats in the state Senate makes it to Gov. Abigail Spanberger's desk.

The Democrat controlled Virginia Senate and House of Delegates have both passed their versions of the commonwealth's budget, largely along party lines.

The Senate version of the budget, which passed Thursday, now includes an amendment to increase the salaries of state senators and delegates to $50,000 annually.

Increase to 50k or an increase of 50k. I was expecting to see something like 250k. But 50k to drop your job and be in public office is still pretty shitty.

Currently, senators make $18,000 a year and delegates make $17,640. Additionally, while in session, legislators receive a $237 per diem. When not in session, they receive a mileage reimbursement of 67 cents per mile to attend meetings, $300 if they attend a meeting (increasing to $400 if they attend two meetings in a day) and $1,250 per month to help maintain an office in their district, according to the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Commission.

Very low pay but some decent perks that probably add up.

State Congress members don't usually quit their day job unless they're wealthy or headed for higher office.

Federal politicians are. State politicians, not so much.

It should be for $0. It's a call to serve not a call to plant your arse there for a career.

We wouldn't need term limits if we could get insider trading reform and a massive reduction in politician compensation.

According to the Virginia Constitution (Article IV, Section 6), the length of the regular session is:60 days in even-numbered years (e.g., 2026, which convened on January 14, 2026, with a scheduled end around mid-March).
30 days in odd-numbered years.

Plus per diem...

VA citizens be thankful they don't sit all year because that would cost you a bundle more.

Yeah but 300% sounds way scarier so let’s make sure that figure is front and center.

Lets talk dollars instead of percentages

I am very anti Dem but the nubmers in this thread do not seem like that much to be honest.

the age old argument here is pay them a professional wage, so they don't keep their private sector jobs so they'll be less likely to turn to graft, corruption, and back room deals.

we've had the same conversation about SEC referee's.

NY's legislature is a full time job so they have a lot of time to figure out more ways to get their hands in the taxpayer's pockets.

Oh my, oh my, oh my.
Do you realize the perks?

Why do you think assholes in LA spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get elected to the Public Service Commission, which incidentally does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BUT APPROVE UTILITY RATE HIKES?

The kickbacks are phenomenal....

Do these meetings have to have a purpose?

Some quick math says, if every weekday you schedule 2 “meetings” a day, 250x400, that can easily get you to 6 six figures plus you get a mileage check.

Sounds like a sweet gig.
