This plan would save social security *and* reduce elderly poverty. Your thoughts?

Everyone over 65 who qualifies for SS is given 32,500/year- 150% of poverty line- instead of their current reimbursement. This would *reduce* the elderly poverty rate

Reminder: when new deal democrats enacted social security, the goal was to ensure old people can afford groceries, not to ensure you can get massages at a Hawaiian resort.

FDR would be shocked at the current structure of the program

So you want SS to be even more socialist than it already is?

Or they could let me keep my 12.4% and I could do with it whatever I want.

I don't have a problem with this, give everyone the same. Which should be the minimum needed to survive.

I’ve paid the max into SS for at least the last 15 years, and will continue to do so for the next 15 years. Been working for 30 years, since I was 15. And now I have to share? Just give me back what me and my employers have put in. I’ll take it from here.

Government social programs don't reduce poverty...ever. They exacerbate it.

I'm all for totally phasing it out. The messaging about how much these social welfare programs destroy your income and savings over time has been putrid. Intentionally so.

I know I didn't address your OP directly, but seems to me it's just more rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

And frick FDR.

explain plz.

It is pretty obvious that the intent of the post was to provide 'social security' sufficient to keep elderly from abject poverty by providing them with enough essentials to live independently.

If your desire is to retire with better options than just existing without fear of hunger, then you need to provide for your desired future lifestyle on your own. You got 30-40 years to do it.

but if you fail to provide for your desired luxuries - you should not expect those who DID accumulate a comfortable nest-egg to spend it on YOUR desired lifestyle.

The 30s and early 40s were a bitch - people actually were on then brink of starvation - but then all they had were their family and friends to keep them alive. People growing up in that age did not forget the misery a lot of families endured and the quality of food and housing they had to accept.

The original intent of SS was to provide a hedge against that occurring again.

But seeing how ungrateful 2/3 of the population is - wanting others to work hard to provide THEM every desire they can imaging - I think another depression would provide a good reset to emphasize the proper way to conduct their lives.

Rich people get more because rich people put more in. Poor people get less because they put less in. This is simple. And i despise SS and especially the disability fraud. Especially military and I'm a veteran

If you want equal payouts then it's only fair to require equal inputs. How the frick is it fair for one person to pay 3 or 4 times more than the next person but get the same SS check?

I don't have a problem either, as long as this is equal to the amount me and my employer paid in since I was 12. Don't forget about accrued value of a conservative investment for 53 years.

Edit to add....there is no sense in getting into discussions on who paid what when and how much, blah, blah, blah. One thing that I'm sure needs to happen to save SS or some form of it is that any change or dramatic reform has to occur to a generation that hasn't been born yet.

FDR would be shocked that we pay people to sit on the porch and never lift a finger to procure food, while continually having babies for the working suckers to feed. Then having people with minor boo boos being paid to sit home. A lot of this waste comes from the money meant to sustain the elderly.

The X post says $32,500 for a couple or $16,250 per person.

$16,250 a year isn't ending senior poverty

Just what we need, another re-packaging of UBI to get people more addicted to the federal tit.

What's the debt at again?

32,000 per year per couple will get them out of poverty?

My dad decided to screw off most of his life once his kids were raised. As a result, he didn’t get much social security payments. But your plan fixes that. Dad would have lived well because you’d take the money from the suckers who actually worked hard and give it to guys like dad. Yeah, sounds fair.

You know what else your stupid plan would do? It would create an army of guys like dad. Most people would figure out that working hard for a long time was for suckers.

Don't you mean your 6.2%? The other 6.2% belongs to your employer.

Cut the fraud and deport illegals.

Nothing else needs to happen.

Thats it.
