I'm really trying to understand why McMahon's teams are so bad

This isn't meant as a flame thread, but rather, an attempt to educate myself. I played high school basketball many moons ago. We ran a basic motion offense. Obviously, the game has evolved significantly since then. I do not pretend to be an expert on offensive sets and what they are trying to do (I basically know what's going on on the defensive end). For those who actually understand what they are trying to run, what is the problem?
1. Is it an overall lack of talent relative to the other teams in the conference?
2. Is it poor evaluation in terms of the types of players he needs to run his system?
3. Is his system too basic and easy to defend?
4. Something else? Some combination of the above?

Soft, can't shoot, can't play defense.

What do we do that is great or special? We don't excel from 3, we don't have a great inside game, we don't play great D, we don't press, we don't take care of the ball really well and we don't have any superstars. Also, the coach does not seem to get the team motivated enough to overcome their lack of star talent.
It's a blah product with terrible results. There is just nothing exciting about our program right now and the PMAC is dead because of it.

They score fewer points than the other team more often than they don’t

His All conference level PG has been lost for the season who makes everyone around him better.
His most skilled and experienced inside player has been lost for the season the second year in a row.

He has evaluated well enough, but ....His All conference level PG has been lost for the season who makes everyone around him better.

Offense operates at a high level when healhy. but....

If he has a system it sucks. We have a team of bench/role players trying to compete. He is a lazy recruiter When he was young he took the ugly girl home at 9:30.

Maybe he should sign more than two good players.

Let's assume for argument's sake it's that simple. What about the three preceding seasons?

The talent isn’t great but it certainly isn’t last in the SEC level

Maybe to the top half but again at one point this season we did play Arkansas, Kentucky and TAMU close. We have enough to compete.

this roster he has now is built best for his system

Look idk ball like this. But for four years our offense has done this 70% of the time.
1.Wait 7 seconds to start the offense
2.Set a bad high ball screen that does nothing
3.guy with the ball dribbles until there is 6 seconds left on the clock

We suck shite on defense. We switch everything, and it constantly puts our guys in bad positions.
An example, Rob Miller, our best rim protector and basically the only guy who can alter shots keeps getting switched onto guards, which pulls him completely out of the paint. That takes away our only real rim protection.
Then, because we’re switching everything, our guards end up matched up on bigs. Now they’re fighting for their lives trying to keep those guys off the glass. This is what allows even the bad teams to beat the hell out of us.

It's not a one size fits all problem, but his system depends on a really good point guard and he's either not been able to afford one or they've been hurt. The team was good when Thomas was healthy this season, even better when we had Reed and Thomas.
Thomas is our highest paid player by far. He was supposed to be the feature. Just awful timing with he and Reed getting hurt before SEC play even started.

Dedan Thomas is a decent player but he is nowhere near all conference level. Watch Darius Acuff, Labaron Philon, or the Tahaad Pettiford if you want to see what an all conference level PG looks like.

Dedan being hurt definitely ruined the ceiling this team had but it's really not excuse for trailing the whole game vs South Carolina, Mississippi State and Georgia AT HOME.

So you are admitting that the program isn't properly funded to compete with the better teams in the SEC?

They don’t rebound well on offense or defense. This is a motor problem. This a scheme and motor and talent problem.
They struggle to penetrate inside on offense resulting in settling for contested low percentage exterior shots and failing to get rebounds for extra chances. This is a scheme problem, but also a roster problem usually caused by not having a proper big man nor a point guard that can creatively create space and distribute the ball.
They struggle to defend against threes, leading to opposing teams having an inordinately high 3 point percentage against us. This is 100% a scheme issue.
Mediocre free-throw percentage late in games causes them to get boat raced in close games inside 2 minutes. This is a preparedness issue. The only reason for struggling at free throws is not spending enough time in and outside of practice shooting them.

There's really not an obvious glaring weakness other than maybe finishing games. It's more of an issue of not doing anything at a high level rather than doing anything in particular at an extremely low level. We're just OK across the board, and whatever a team does well tends to shine brightly when they play us.
Essentially, McMahon's teams never have an aspect that gives them an edge. Even most bad teams have some sort of edge to them that makes them a little dangerous. We are not threatening at all.
