Politco

Of the 12 worst bridges in the nation, 4 can be found in Louisiana

quote:

While some of these bridge owners are seeking solutions, a lack of money and logistical hurdles have kept Congress, state governments and the bridges’ owners from offering quick fixes for a dozen crucial bridges, including in cities such as Philadelphia and New Orleans.

We (the country) are doing better than we were several years back when over 400,000 bridges across the country were deemed "structurally deficient". That number has come down over the years, but it still isn't great.

I ride over these bridges fairly often and cannot believe the Luling Bridge (Hale Boggs) isn't on the list. It really feels that bridge is worse than the others listed.

is any bridge in Louisiana privately owned?

I have the utmost confidence that Jeff Landry will get on this right away and present a suitable solution to the voters of our state.

including a higher risk of collapse or serious damage for many of them if they are struck by a cargo ship.

As I thought. Has nothing to do with the structural integrity itself.

Luckily we have river pilots with proper breeding that will keep the bridges safe.

Nonsense, these are engineering funding terms and have nothing to do with the bridge being safe. Politico said nothing when John bell was Governor.. They pick and choose their state based on politics.

All hype

Spending millions to install lights on CCC instead of repairing is one of the most Louisiana moves ever.

Or they are referencing the "old" bridge in Baton Rouge, which wasn't redone.

- The state has identified needed repairs on 2,997 bridges.

- This compares to 3,231 bridges that needed work in 2021.

- Over the life of the IIJA, Louisiana will receive a total of $1.1 billion in bridge formula funds, which will help make needed repairs.

- Louisiana currently has access to $876.3 million of that total, and has committed $322.3 million towards 140 projects as of June 2025.

- Of the 12,684 bridges in the state, 1,423, or 11.2 percent, are classified as structurally deficient.

- This means one of the key elements is in poor or worse condition. This is down from 1,631 bridges classified as structurally deficient in 2021.

-The deck area of structurally deficient bridges accounts for 6.1 percent of total deck area on all structures.

"Worst" is not the way to categorize them. This is about ships colliding with the bridges. "Higher risk" is better.

Didn't they completely renovate that bridge around 10 years ago with new cables and structures?

Drove over Huey P this past weekend for first time since renovations. They did an incredible job tbh. What a shitshow the old bridge was...
