What a SCOTUS Gift: Refunding Tariff Money to Business Would Boost Economy

Say it ain't so.
Senator Kennedy is Spot On Again!!
quote:
Kennedy said, “The most interesting question is, what we do with all of this money? We’ve got between 150 and 400 billion dollars in tariffs collected. That money’s not in other countries, it’s here. My Democratic colleagues are saying, oh, give it back, give it back. Well, my Democratic peeps better be careful what they ask for. Because if he gives back 300 billion dollars worth of tariff money to the business community in America, this economy’s going to roar, man. And the midterms are only a few months off.”

There won't be refunds IMO
At least not anytime soon. It's going to be a long legal boondoggle

I agree with you. But what a gift the SCOTUS decision was to this country.

So lawyers are going to suck up a lot of the money?
because other lawyers decreed that it must be so?
I have never heard of that happening before!

So give companies the money that was collected by overcharging/taxing American consumers?

According to the posters here, no companies raised prices and passed along the taxes to consumers.
So if they're right about that...yeah.

Those of you cheering for what he said realize that he gave a tacit admission that the tariffs have been dragging the economy, right?
If putting that money back into circulation causes the economy to boom, then taking it out in the first place had to have caused a drag.
You can't have it both ways.

Yes, a refund. If something is taken from you illegally, I’m sure you would want it back.

Yup. Hell, I'm still waiting on my FEMA check from 2005

Sen. Kennedy is little more than Mr. Soundbite.
Years ago, I was hoping he'd be our next Governor in Louisiana. But when he declined to challenge John Bel Edwards in 2019 (I can understand why he stayed on the sidelines for Vitter in 2015), I fully understood he was a fraud.
In this bit, he doesn't even really know what the hell he's saying. He's just trying to get another overplayed soundbite added to his resume.

Anybody would.
Every single poster on this board would want the money back if the government charged them twice for their property tax bill or their car tag, and this is no different.
And every one of them would scream like a mashed cat (as they should) if they didn't get it.
But you are watching populism pay out in front of your eyes. Because Trump likes tariffs, this is somehow diffe(R)ent.

Whatever money they spent on tariffs, they already priced it into their products and sold them. Why the F would we refund them....unless they refund every customer who purchased from them

I know it is not the law but the people who paid the tariff should only be able to recover actual losses. Instead, some will recieve a windfall.
Posted on 2/22/26 at 10:05 am to JimEverett
Its not gonna be given back.
Posted on 2/22/26 at 10:12 am to ChatGPT of LA
The law says it will. Or at least will if the payers properly jump through all the hoops.

Just not a correct statement at all.
It was illegally taken. Why would you not want to give refunds? Would you rather the government have that money versus American businesses?

So it looks like there are no takers to address this point. Interesting.

Especially since they were paid in the end by consumers.
