Angels’ owner: ‘Winning not a top five priority for fans’

Artie Moreno from his annual media conference at spring training:
“The number one thing fans want is affordability. They want affordability. They want safety, and they want a good experience when they come to the ballpark. Believe it or not, winning is not in their top five. The moms want to be able to afford to bring the kids. Moms make about 80% of the decisions. They want to be able to bring their kids and be affordable and they want safety and they want to have a good experience, so they get all the entertainment stuff or whatever. The purists, you know, it’s just straight winning.”
And that attitude is why this franchise, which for a lot of years back in the day was my favorite, is in the dumpster.

This probably describes a LOT of MLB teams

Being a dodgers fan is for celebrities and posers for 95% of the masses

He’s probably not wrong for a portion of fans. A ballpark is a great experience for a family on a summer’s evening. Especially a minor league team. Good atmosphere, good food at affordable prices, maybe some giveaways, maybe fireworks after the game. For a lot of families that come out, the records of the teams playing is irrelevant

I understand where he is coming from, but that’s total and complete bullshite.
How many fans go to a game when the team sucks? Now when you are in first place toward the end of the season how many fans are there?
End of story
Now as owners, I 100% agree. To some degree an owner wants to maximize revenue which doesn’t always align with completely with winning.

If ownership doesnt want to spend with the likes of the Dodgers, then this guy is doing the right thing.
MLB decided to make the league not competitive. So owners of the lesser teams and their fans should just be happy to provide an enjoyable ballpark experience.
I agree with the owner.

He's right in that I'm not attending an in person sporting event in a shithole area filled with degenerate fans that get drunk and want to fight or act stupid. I'd rather watch at home.

I can respect your take but is the situation you describe really all that new? 70 years ago when the Yankees were dominating the American League, three-fourths of the teams started the season on Opening Day knowing that they had absolutely no chance to compete or to be anything else but cannon fodder for the Yankees. Yet some folks consider those the glory days of baseball.

Same with NFL, You can make hand over fist, and lose every week.
There is a reason the same teams are shitty every year. Their owners line their pockets and the on field product is secondary

I wasnt around 70 years ago. But i was a kid when the Braves went worst to first. I remember when it meant something to win the division. Thats when i fell in love with MLB.
And i remember when the yankees started buying every free agent in the 2000s. That's when it began to feel unbalanced. The shite the dodgers do now is just not fun for the fans of other teams. Same crap happened in the NBA when Lebron decided he wanted to do the super team thing; and then Durant too. That stuff is bad for the league. Lets have 32 teams but only 4 are competitive. That's a stupid model for any league (or any business). It leads to apathy. And apathy is exactly what this Angels owner is talking about. They dont care about winning, lets just have a nice time.
I get that may seem totally uncompetitive and against the spirit of the game. But thats the plate MLB has set for itself.

As someone who used to attend MLB ganes regularly until about 3 years ago, this is exactly where the product is.
It's about just having a good time. The experience. Buying good merch. Having a hot dog.
The crap has been so imbalanced for so long it's just not my priority when thinking about the MLB teams for the games I go to.

Winning #1, but bringing these uniforms back is a close second
had one of the best hats in the business

I love that cap, I have a couple of them, but my favorite is the original one they wore when they came into the AL as an expansion team, with a halo on top.

Call me fair weather or whatever, but if my team sucks. I don't watch nearly as much as I do when they're winning. And I definitely don't go to as many games in person. What real fan enjoys watching their team get the shite beat of them more times than not?

I’m an old fart so I used to go see the Braves a LOT in 1970s. Many of those teams sucked horribly but even if the odds were against them winning you still had reasons to go like the Aaron chase, a chance to see another ATG in Phil Niekro or a chance to maybe see Evans or Horner hit one out. Or a chance to see some of the legends of that era from other teams. I had the first Chik-fil-A sandwich I ever ate at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, thought I had died and gone to poultry heaven because there wasn’t a Chik-fil-A on every other corner back then.
