The Supreme Court on Friday struck down a huge chunk of President Donald Trump’s far-reaching tariff agenda. The law that undergirds those import duties “does not authorize the President to impose tariffs,” the majority ruled six to three.

What does this mean in practical terms?

Reading else where he has plenty of options available under other statues

Would imagine that would require working with congress, which means a lot of time.

Lawsuits may be coming in that the govt will have to repay collected tariffs

EDIT, long story short the long term repercussions will take a while to play out.

But immediate for global companies is that they probably will no longer be subjected to the tariffs.

Ironically, this is going to have *major* negative repercussions for gdp readings in 2026, as firms will import huge inventories to get ahead of any new attempts at tariffs

They struck down the mechanism he used to issue blanket tariffs. Can use the same mechanism and re-institute them within the law.

Yes. The market knew it was unconstitutional and knew how the bench would vote.

Assuming if they can get something through congress, that is what needs to be done

Doesn't really change anything. He just needs to adjust how he institutes the tariffs.

The only people who thought this would stand were hardcore Trumpers (can’t do wrong) and hardcore progressives (SCOTUS is bought and paid for by Trump). Anyone who thought SCOTUS would rule by the letter of the law believed this wasn’t going to stand. Most of the uncertainty came from how long it would take and what repayments, if any, would look like.

Correct the money just goes back to USA importers — will be a nice windfall as I highly doubt the end consumer gets the eventual refund

The moment Lutnick’s firm Cantor Fitzgerald started buying up tariff refund rights from companies folks should have seen the writing on the wall. Grifters gonna get theirs.

The narrative it seems coming out is that this ruling means nothing. They will just pivot to another obscure law to use.

ignoring the obvious that this needs to go through Congress

I don't think he would have the votes in Congress to reinstate many of these tariffs. Republicans would be crazy to take a party-line vote like that in an election year.
