Everyone hates this railroad crossing. When are they going to build an overpass that takes cars over the tracks? It would be a relatively short overpass and would solve lots of problems on Metairie Road.

In the alternative they could do an underpass like where Canal Boulevard goes under the tracks. If it works there it would work on Metairie road which is natural high ground.

I get the sentiment, but the unintended consequences are a homeless encampment.

So, I'll pass.

Why was the train on the road?

99.9% of the time the driver ignores train warnings and tries to beat the train before it arrives at the crossing

The train has no mechanism to react in any timely manner and the hurried driver gets injured/killed.

Someone’s clearly never driven on Metairie Rd. In the rain.

Trains are always sneaking up on people. I bet it took a hard, unexpected left turn and whacked the car.

Forget it. A overpass or underpass will never be built on that stretch of Metairie Rd.

People in Old Metairie would riot over the idea of an overpass on Metairie Road.

True.

Just like you can forget Highland Rd. in Baton Rouge ever going to 4 lanes.

They prefer getting stuck at a railroad crossing? Assuming it could be financed, what’s the issue?

Yes, as a matter of fact. Metairie road is curved because it follows a natural high ground. The founders here built up on high ground first, hence “old Metairie”

Also, this is why Gentilly blvd is curved

It’s more fun to hit that one fast and catch some air while yelling, “YAHOO!!”

Well for one it would absolutely frick the main road the everyone in OM uses every single day for years on end. You'd have to eminent domain a lot of property near that crossing and it would be an unbelievable eyesore. I'd much rather wait for the train than deal with that bullshite.

I'm talking about building an overpass or underpass at that crossing. It'd be a clusterfrick of epic proportions to attempt that.

Wrong. It is built over an existing public road. No buildings/houses would need to come down. You could do something like this:

Such an unsightly structure would interfere with the bucolic setting of Metairie Road in the heart of Old Metairie. Over eager drivers need to relax, and stop look and listen. Or better yet, pull over for a breather and get a drink at Winston's while the train rolls down the track.

Not mention you'd have to build a bridge at all the other crossings.

Just move the train.
