This is the thing that scares me the most about 21st century warfare. We don't seem to have the capability to stop these attacks.

Surgeries canceled or moved to other hospitals, patient info compromised.

Stop plugging everything in to the network.

It's not difficult to secure against these things, it's that people, companies, institutions don't learn about them or don't use the right mitigation techniques.

Because most people are barely surviving and are just doing the bare minimum. Because they get paid the bare minimum. And the president that said he was going to bring prices down hasn't. It's pretty simple really.

My bigger concern is that these attacks, or even software issues, render hospitals virtually inoperable. There has to be a way to ensure that hospitals can continue to function as hospitals if their beloved tech happens to shite the bed.

Attacks will happen. Its how they are handled that matters. Gotta have a plan for when this happens

Somebody clicked on the wrong Facebook link.

Spoke with a guy who had a CPA firm in central MS one time. He had a secretary click on a Facebook link one day at lunch on a computer and it let in some ransomware. Said it walked right past the first layer of protection.. but he had some other kind of pricy virus protection/firewall that jumped in and stopped it. Said it locked one file before the system stopped it and he deleted that one file and recovered it from backup.

I forget what that software was called. But he said that Facebook was blocked in that office from that second on.

They got a message later requesting bitcoin to unlock it. Said he had a good laugh at that before he deleted it.

The need more than one network. At least one, control, needs to be inaccessible, cutoff from public web.

Do you have any idea how many unsuccessful attacks occur every minute of the day?

Given the thinking power we see on social media and on this site, I'm surprised they are not successful more often than they are.

Some people put MFA on almost everything they do. Others are still using "password".

All that being said, building the defenses some people refuse to use is a massive undertaking. Doesn't mean you can make them idiotproof.

UMMC officials said the attack has affected access to the hospital's electronic medical records. All UMMC clinic locations are closed as a result.

When I did my fellowship at UMMC and Epic crashed did not close clinics. We just used paper and then had to reenter everything into Epic when it was back online. Of course now that something might affect they payment systems they close the clinics.

Agreed. A scalpal shouldn't have a public ip address. Medical equipment in a hospital can still be networked and not be on the public network or even available inline from any other points within the internal network. There's nothing revolutionary about any of the attacks. This happened because people don't know what tf they're doing or maybe just don't give a shite.

99.9% of successful cyber attacks are because of idiots having accounts on the affected IT systems.

Your system is only as secure as the idiots that will click links usually in phishing emails.
