Let’s say you have a daughter, she turned 17 a few months ago, would you allow her and fellow barely 17 year old female classmate drive over 500 miles and 3 states away to go camping and hiking at a National Forest in West Virginia all by themselves?

And no, this scenario does not involve my daughter. These two girls did invite her, but she laughed and said there was no way we’d let her go. It just boggles my mind the parents of these two girls have signed off on this trip.

I went to Cancun at 17 without parents on a senior trip.
Hiking seems tame

Do you know the other girls' parents. I remember my high school days and id tell my parents x and it couldn't be further from the truth some of the times. Be thankful your daughter respects you enough that she's honest with you.

And to directly answer your question no I would not be alright with that. So much that could go wrong and they dont have the life experience to know what qualifies as a threat and what doesnt.

It depends on how much you trust your kids. But yeah, just girls? I’d be against it probably.

I’m a male but we did Panama Spring Break with no adults at 17 and 18. And Cancun at 18.

I wouldn’t mind a camping trip like that, but the 500 miles would be a concern. You’re talking about 8 hours.

It was a different time (1997) but me and 5 buddies hopped in two Z71s (17 and 18 year olds) and headed down to Panama City for spring break completely unsupervised. Was the best 3 days of my life. Looking back on it, I can’t believe my parents were cool with it. Granted, it was all guys but we did things that just couldn’t happen these days. Unreal fun. Back when the strip was the strip and fun times had by all.

I went to Cancun on my senior trip in the 90s. Don't remember much though.

I do. And frankly I’m gobsmacked they’d agree to this.

She told us about it tonight at the dinner table. Yes, we’re one of the holdout families that still sit down at the dining room table every night to have dinner and converse with one another.

I don't even have kids and it would be a no for me.

And yet. I was 17 when I graduated HS, and while there was someone's parent somewhere near-ish I think, I went on senior trip to Panama City without issue. And my parents were notorious for how strict they were. So who knows.

I'm more intrigued that barely 17 year olds want to go hike in West Virginia to begin with.

I mean absolutely zero offense by this, but I always pictured you were like 65.
