We currently have a ‘17 ford explorer that just crossed 100k miles and I just don’t trust it to go much further. My wife is hard on vehicles…
So I want a tank. Something we can have for a while. I’ve been looking into Toyota highlanders and Honda pilots. Both seem to have some issues people have mentioned.
I’ll definitely be buying preowned.

is this based on anything in real life or is this something you are telling yourself to justify a purchase of something else that is already "preowned"?

Sequoia - at 100K it'll just be getting broken in

We'll be getting one with the 5.7 when my daughter inherits my wife's 4Runner in a couple years

What's your reason for not trusting it? We've got a 17 explorer sport with 147k and we've had absolutely zero issues and honestly trust it for another 140k

Id rather have a car with 100k of my own miles than a 40k miles car from someone I don't know.

Water is wet. More news at 10.

My wife's brakes were squealing six months after we bought a brand new SUV. No matter the amount of coaching we do, resource management with vehicles is not working.

Every vehicle has issues.

Toyotas and Hondas have less.

I beleive you are in the full size suv market and not the max size like a sequoia. Even though they are great. But you’ll spend your retirement on the gas.

1. I would not buy a used pathfinder. Especially the pre 2021 with CVT

2. I’m not suggesting these but they are available.
- vw atlas
-Mazda
-jeep grand Cherokee L (third row on the L)
-traverse
-explorer
-Lexus gx

Thing is. The nicer brands can shite on you as well. All it takes is some accounting guy to suggest they replace a good bearing with a crappy Chinese one for a difference of 30 cents apiece and the whole engine is screwed. You might find out after the warranty is up. That’s house they do it.

Continued……

It wont go down very well here. But consider that these nice brands can crap on you and maybe settle on Grand Cherokee L or pathfinder new.

Those two will possibly afford you an extended factory mfg warranty. They are designed to die, not survive like early Tacoma.

Search car edge for these that are 500 miles out. Get the best Goldilocks distance-price combo. Keep letting them compete via email. Don’t go in.

Used is just to risky and the aren’t really marked off well enough to buy used.

Another vote for the previous body sequoia. Got a 2010 with 350k and a 2019 with 170k. You wont be disappointed. No the fanciest features but will last forever. Ill drive the one with 350k anywhere. Ive got less than $3k in repairs in it.

My wife has a '22 Lincoln Aviator that she uses for her business. Loves it. No problems so far.

I’ll be in a similar boat later this year except my wife has a smaller SUV and we will need three rows with another kid on the way.

We really liked the Buick Enclave redesign but I’m weary of a 4 banger turbo engine

Grand highlander was also on the list but neither of us liked it on the test drive and it’s fairly pricey. I also do not believe new Toyotas are as reliable as the older models so I don’t like paying a Toyota premium when it’s not as bulletproof as older ones.

I would love to say f it and spend the money on a used LX570 or Land Cruiser with the V8 but my wife doesn’t like those. I dk what we will do but if you are wanting something bulletproof get a Lexus/toyota with the V8 (pre 2021) tbh you’re explorer should be fine for a few years if you’ve done regular maintenance like oil changes every 5-7k miles and it’s probably due for a transmission fluid change

My wife is on her 4th Pilot(2025 Trailsport). We have put probably 400k miles on previous 3. Never had issues with any of them. The Trailsport is our favorite so far. A little more GC than regular models, AWD with AT, panoramic sunroof and tow hitch.

The new model pilots have more leg room and comfort than previous models. We took our 2021 BE too Northern New Mexico and Colorado twice in 2 years. Ran the Rockies like a champ.

Stelantis had earnings release this week. They are expecting something like 3-4 billion in the next year or two on warranty repairs.

I don’t think anything dodged or jeep should be considered

My Buddy bought a 2023 GC L model. Paid like 60K for it new. It was a total POS. He traded it with less than 40K in mikes on it less than 2 years old and got 38K for it. Never buy a Stelantis vehicle.
