I have a two year old lab mix who's been sick the last two weeks with intermittent vomiting and chronic diarrhea.

I've taken him to the vet and they've done blood paneling and fecal tests, both which didn't show much. The fecal came back negative. In the first panel, he had a high pancreas level so the thinking was it could be pancreatitis, but a week later, they did the second pancreas-specific test and it came back normal so they ruled that out.

Their suggstion has been to just keep him on a bland diet of chicken and rice but this has been going on for a while now and I'm getting more and more concerned. When he's started to get better, I've started switching him back to his normal food, but he vomits everytime I do that. Kind of at a loss of what to do.

Anyone ever dealt with something similar or have any suggestions?

Maybe he doesn't like his normal food you're giving him?

Sounds like when you follow the vet’s advice, he gets better. And every time you short circuit the treatment, he gets worse.

Maybe consider following their advice longer?

Did you make any changes to his diet before this started happening? Dogs have very sensitive stomachs.

You also went against the vets advice switching from a bland diet back to his regular food. This is not helpful at all.

Go see a different vet and run more tests?

Have you considered switching dog food brands?

He probably ate your wife's panties just like the last thread about a sick lab.

Get him canned pumpkin and smear it on his food. If he gets it down it’ll settle his stomach……they say.

I would definitely lean towards this. We have dealt with this in the past, and any changes in their food causes this. Seems some dogs can eat anything and be be perfectly fine, while others will poo blood if you make a minor change.

I would continue with bland diet, and either stay on that permanently, or if you do change, make it very slowly by mixing food in more over time.

Dog food can have salmonella and other bacterial crap in it just like human food. Try a different food or have yours tested.

Change the food. A few years ago, one of my dogs had intermittent diarrhea through the summer. Long story short, the Victor brand was having issues and didn’t announce it. I switched her food bf it was announced and no issues after.

Give a good probiotic. Maybe prebiotic, too. Need to fix the gut biome. Adored Beast has quality products. You can find others. Mix new food with current food increasing new food as you do along and by week’s end, switch over. Add pumpkin puree to while changing over.

This is all if everything checked out at vet.

Sounds like the food you are giving him is not agreeing with him. May be an allergy or something. That would explain the pancreas lab numbers.

And you can't just flip flop diets on them. You gotta ease them between feed. Gradual mix in. That could cause upset stomach too.

How fast is your dog eating? My 3 year old yellow lab would throw up after eating sometimes. Not every time like yours but we put a tennis ball in her bowl and it slowed her eating. She doesn’t throw up as much anymore.

Not sure if that will help.

Hopefully, the vet did that. An xray is the 1st thing I ask for vs running the gamut of expensive blood tests unless the vet says nothing is palpable and not concerned about an obstruction.

Food allergies.

Buddy has a dog allergic to chicken and has a reaction to what you are describing.

Obviously it’s not chicken for your dog, but read your dog food’s ingredients and possibly go through a process of elimination. Know that it may not be listed but the plants who process the food also process other ingredients.

Try a different brand and get something that is lamb or salmon based. Tractor Supply has their own brand called 4Health that's decent... made by Diamond Pet Foods.

4health with Wholesome Grains Adult Salmon and Potato Formula Dry Dog Food
