Today, I’m releasing the City’s preliminary budget. After years of fiscal mismanagement, we’re staring at a $5.4 billion budget gap — and two paths.

One: Albany can raise taxes on the ultra-wealthy and the most profitable corporations and address the fiscal imbalance between our city and state.

The other, a last resort: balance the budget on the backs of working people using the only tools at the City's disposal.

The first path matches a structural crisis with a sustainable and fair solution. I know where I stand.

New Yorkers voted for bold change and competent leadership. We will deliver both, and we look forward to partnering with Albany to protect working New Yorkers.

ETA:

quote:

Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a record $127 billion budget Tuesday — with an ultimatum to Albany to tax the rich or he’ll slap the Big Apple with a massive property tax hike.

The eye-popping preliminary budget — up around $11 billion from the current year — will also call for the city to pull from its $10 billion rainy day fund.

The Democratic socialist framed his proposal — which would also include pulling from the city’s $10 billion rainy day fund — as a “last resort” to balance the budget if Gov. Kathy Hochul doesn’t agree to increase taxes on millionaires.

“I do not want to raise property taxes,” Mamdani said of his preliminary budget plan, which would hike property taxes 9.5% to raise an additional $3.7 billion in the next fiscal year.

“When faced with this crisis, the question is who should pay these taxes? I believe that it should be the wealthiest New Yorkers, the most profitable corporations. I believe that they can afford to pay a little bit more,” Mamdani said.

The presentation kicked off months of negotiations with top local officials, including City Council Speaker Julie Menin, who said hiking property taxes was a non-starter.

That didn’t take long.

NYC's bureaucracy is massive and yet it delivers less than almost any other place in the nation at three times the cost.

The deficit only grow larger when people flee the state for Texas and Florida after he taxes them to oblivion.

What happens when NY businesses and the wealthy outside of NYC decide they don’t want to provide financial support for NYC?

Wow. Let's correct that.

After years of democratic fiscal mismanagement.

Oh, hold on. Maybe he is correct
Doesn't democratic basically mean fiscal mismanagement?

So i guess democratic is redundant...

So let's see. You want to tax the successful among the state to address the fiscal imbalance caused by years of fiscal mismanagement.

Yeah, I know how that games is played. The fiscal mismanagement escalates and you end up with a deficit again.

And then you raise taxes on the people already paying the majority of the taxes.

There is a zero percent probability that the ultra wealthy will pay more in taxes to make up the deficit.

And the mass exodus of businesses shall begin.

This was very predictable.

This is where they rewrite history and portray DeBlasio as an establishment politician who enacted damaging conservative-type policies.

How long until Wall Street and everything that goes along with it moves to South Florida or DFW?

Most of those folks already have second homes in south florida anyway

Wealthy is a moving target. I suspect within my lifetime that cretins like Mamdanis, VOR, Decatur, tboy, and cubbies will be calling two cars, a house, and retirement accounts “wealthy”.

Depends on who you are calling "they".

Per Grok:

quote:

Based on NBC exit polls cited in Newsweek and ABC News, among native-born New Yorkers, 38% voted for Zohran Mamdani vs. 49% for Andrew Cuomo (rest for others like Sliwa).

Among non-natives, Mamdani's support was higher: 55% for those living in NYC >10 years (not born there), 78% for 5-10 years residents, and 85% for <5 years.

Overall, Mamdani won with 50.78% of the total vote.

Blame the rich and siphon from their money like mosquitoes or leeches. As expected.
