Do you notice how often people say ‘like’ when speaking?

It is something that you probably can’t stop hearing once you start listening for it, and somewhat mind boggling how often the word is used in sentences when people are speaking.

‘If you want, like, fresh fruit you have to go to a stand. But make sure you, like, take exact change’

I wonder how much time is spent saying the work ‘like’ in the US each day, if all the seconds were added together.

With the people who really lean on it, it is all I can hear. Everything just fades away as I count the "likes".

It's annoying when it's used at the beginning of a sentence.

One thing I try to catch and correct myself from doing is using "like" before stating an amount.

Example: "I ate like 6 pieces of king cake."

Better stated: "I ate about 6 pieces of king cake."

Schools preached it so hard to not say "uhhhh" when speaking that they replaced it with "like"

Constantly since the Valley Girl era.

One of those trends that outlives a normal trend lifecycle.

For me it's "but um" like it's crazy. I call it a verbal speed bump.

The worst now is how many people overuse “literally”!

In my truck driving home a couple mornings ago and I had on a talk radio show where the emcee had a veteran female Chicago cop on as a guest who was describing her duties as a PO. At one time she must have said "Literally" 10 times in a 2 minute description of her duties on the job.

I had to turn it off.

Everyone has a word like that. For some it’s like. Some people say um or okay. Some people have entire sayings like “from that standpoint.”

It’s glaring if you’re ever in a job where you see your talking typed up.

It can be an annoying habit, but usually it’s just how your brain fills in gaps while you’re organizing your thoughts.
