Local theaters are showing old movies. Last night was JP, which I haven’t seen in a long time.

Still an entertaining movie. Some thoughts:

- Jeff Goldblum’s character mostly vanishes after the first act. I get that a movie can only have so many leads. He just goes from an interesting side character making thought provoking points to just sitting around wincing.

- The grandson was dead. And then returned to life. And no one talked about it again.

- BF Goodrich must have ponied up for product placement in the movie. Lots of shots of those All Terrain T/As.

- Did Samuel Jackson end up being the biggest star of the entire cast?

- Hunting dinosaurs with a shotgun?

- Laura Dern looked good in those shorts

- The storm hit that island very quickly

It is a great movie, but I wish they would have stuck closer to the book.

Malcolm dies.

John Hammond dies.

Muldoon survives.

Grant actually likes kids in the book and has a closer connection with them.

The river scene with the T-Rex in the latest movie is actually in the original book.

That is actually pretty close to the book.

He becomes bed bound and slowly becomes more and more altered as he becomes more ill.

SPAS-12 with slugs is not a terrible choice. It also probably looked "cool" to the design team

Malcolm didn’t die in the book. He lived and was the main character in the Lost World novel

That initial holy shite you created dinosaurs scene, with that score…

I’m not sure there’ll be another movie moment like that.

1993 may have been the best time to be ten years old of all time.

It was retconned in the second novel.

That movie holds up so well. It’s an incredible piece of work, one of the best films ever IMO. Spielberg at the height of his powers creates a legendary piece that launches an entire genre of movies. Also fantastic writing, incredibly quotable and memorable. Elite level cast

A retcon.

It was through outside pressure that Crichton brought him back to life for a sequel.

In the original release of Jurassic Park, Malcolm dies.

I worked summer camps back then. Every single kid in my camp wanted to be a paleontologist when they grew up after that movie came out.

Yup.

This was one my first experiences of seeing a movie after I had read the book... typically I'd see a movie which would get me curious about the book.

I was definitely surprised they didn't film the scene with Muldoon under the Jeep, and keeping Malcolm alive (though it makes sense considering who they got to play him).

Saw it in the theater when I was 12.
The scene where the T. rex breaks out was pure magic.

One of the two best movies I watched at the theatre

Been a while since I read the book, but is it Muldoon or Sattler that wedges themselves into a pipe to escape the raptors?

Also, it is obvious why they didn’t kill Hammond. Attenborough played the lovable grandpa so well. In the book, he was an a-hole and a bit of a conman.

I honestly don't remember... I just remember Muldoon hiding under a jeep and shooting one of the knees of a raptor, forcing them to circle around but not get to him. I don't even remember how he escaped.

Yeah, I remember it being the biggest difference among the characters, personality-wise. No reader feels bad when he dies in the book because he's a jerk who barely acknowledges he almost got his grandkids killed.
