Have any of you resident OT Ballers done this, or known someone that's done it?
Somewhere in the UK could be interesting..
Scottish Highlands estate for retirement.
Ireland looks interesting as well.
It's a fun thought to dabble with at least.

Obviously it’s doable for Americans to do so. I’d put my toe in the pond first by leasing/renting something there first for at least a year to see how I’d like year-round living in a place.
I’ve got a good friend who invited me to be one of five parties to all go in together on an Italian rural property, not to rent it out to strangers at all but to each use it for ~1/5th of the year. Mildly interesting for around $100k initially and then an estimated annual $10-$20k for maintenance/upkeep/ taxes/repairs.
I trusted that person but not a couple of the other parties is why I didn’t move forward on it.
I’m planning on short-term (30-90 days) leasing places in Europe in retirement at the very least.

This never works out.

Unless you’re Islamic I don’t know why.

If you’re retired, just rent.

Italy is to close to Europe and UK. I'd buy South America or the DR before anything across the pond.

We're in southern italy. Very conservative. Not many foreign invaders

It’s a little more than “close to Europe,” it’s actually in Europe. It’s one of the 6 founding countries of the EU.

Spent last week in Tuscany, Pescara and southern Italy. I would move to Tuscany in a second if I came across a good buy.

It's surprisingly easy to get a mortgage in Italy

I live in Central Europe. Lots of positives, won’t bother listing them now.
If you’re in a risk taking mood I would look into Hungary/Croatia/Slovenia.
If the Russians don’t invade in 15-20 years you’ll be sitting pretty.

How much time have you spent there?
We were in Italy for 2 weeks in Nov, and it was fantastic but I was ready to go home also. Not completely over it, but I’m not sure I’d want to spend 2 months a year there every year.
Do you think your home will be a net positive investment? There’s a point where just owning an asset even at a small loss makes sense, so I get that. I’m just curious of the longer term value in relation to the costs.

I go probably 3/4 times a year for a couple of weeks at a time. I work remote, so just work while I'm there.
House pays for itself since we rent it out during the summer, so no ongoing expenses for us. Europeans pay out the arse in the summer.
We have a car, so I can go explore any cities I want. And there's an international airport 20 minutes away with daily cheap flights all over europe.
eta: I fly for free from credit card points. Obviously, I stay there for free. So I can go to europe for two weeks and spend less than a thousand. We let friends and family use it for free, so it's always cool when other people go and use it. It's five floors and has a shite ton of space.

I was in Pisa this trip but in December I stayed in Massa Marittima and loved it there.
