The quitGPT movement - OpenAI Boycott

Early in February 2026, a grassroots backlash against ChatGPT began gaining steam online — not over the sunsetting of GPT-4o or outages, but as a political and ethical protest movement.
quote:
Branded “QuitGPT,” the campaign is urging users to cancel their ChatGPT subscriptions, delete the app and shift to alternative AI chatbots — and its momentum is raising hard questions about how AI intersects with politics, corporate behavior and consumer values.
QuitGPT is a decentralized campaign that has spread through Reddit, Instagram and dedicated websites where users pledge to drop ChatGPT Plus and other paid tiers. Organizers and participants cite several core grievances:
Political contributions by OpenAI leadership: A widely shared claim in the campaign alleges that OpenAI’s president made a major political donation to a pro-Trump super PAC — a move critics argue contradicts the activist values of many Silicon Valley users.
AI use in government enforcement: QuitGPT supporters highlight that tools powered by ChatGPT-style models have been used in hiring or screening processes by agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, heightening concerns that AI is being deployed in controversial real-world systems.
Ethical unease and corporate accountability: Beyond specific incidents, the movement reflects a broader uneasiness about who controls the technology users rely on daily and what those leaders’ values say about the tools themselves.
It is rather curious why this is specific to chatGPT considering the criticism of Elon by the left.

I don't use chatGPT because I think there are better products out there. I'm currently using Gemini and think it's a lot more efficient.
But if I were to "boycott" chatGPT (which you could only do if you were paying for a subscription model obviously) it would be based on some comments about them hinting about using the government as a back stop in the event they fail (pushing for a bail out)

I subscribe to chatGPT… and nothing in that article makes me want to boycott.

Isn't the US AI industry behind Trump? I think his policies are more favorable to them than what democrats proposed.

So just quit one AI version for another?? Yeah that doesn't smell like a competitors move. Even if it's wannabe competitor.
Drop all AI and then we can talk.

Marc Adreessen is one of the major venture capital fellas, who has been on Rogan a few times.
He said he went to a meeting during the biden admin where they laid out a strawman on how the industry would evolve. They would pick a few winners, compliant to the federal govt and squash the rest with targeted regulation. He walked away horrified.
Trump wants them to account for their own power and water needs, not to the detriment of the communities around them, other than that, have at it boys.
Boycotting chatgpt is foolish, all the AI companies are pro Trump given the aforementioned, of course they are still liberal so it makes no sense. Same nonsense as driving an electric car when the power source is fueled by fossil fuels

After the article yesterday and the feedback provided, I am looking past Chatgpt to a paid subscription that aggregates. I even asked AI which one would it use.

Yeah, I don't get what message that really sends. And I'm curious as to why this group is specifically targeting openAI

And... watcha leaning towards?
I use my sub for school help and image generation. The only thing chatGPT won't do for me, that I really want, is make video of Sally reciting historical speeches. Or any video, really.

I think so.
When Mark Andressen went on Rogan, he was told that the Biden administration said they were going to pick winners and losers for AI and that made the majority of them throw their money behind Trump even though they were a bunch of Silicon Valley liberals.
It's why most of the all in guys got behind him.

I think part of it is they were going to get behind the winning horse
They thought Trump was going to beat Kamala and smartly backed the winner

The writer of that article is a flaming libtard so of course powerbottom is reading it
All the chatbots have different strengths. I use Claude, Gemini, Grok and Chatgpt.

Are they still training it to give you leftist answers like when they made George Washington black?

Wait until these guys hear about the loom.

I am normally someone that doesn't like subscriptions, but I subscribe as well. I get that there are environmental impacts that we are going to have to find solutions to, but to say we should boycott Ai would be like saying we should have boycotted the industrial revolution.

Yes. Mainly it's that you only get a few uses with the free version, unlimited with paid.
I have the 19.99 version, so I imagine the more expensive one is probably faster, but I don't know.
It's really good at checking work and explaining things. I know it isn't 100% perfect or always right, but it is supremely helpful in math concepts.

This is purely downstream of the AI companies signing up to work with Trump. It’s not a coincidence that they listed donations to Trump as their #1 concern.
The left will rally against anything that is viewed by them as positive for him because they’re fighting a zero sum game against the MAGA movement.
The irony here is that I personally believe we aren’t ready for implementation of AI into the general commercial economy and that it should be done slowly over time to prevent widespread displacement of human workers and tax payers so I share their sentiments regarding AI but for vastly different reasons.

They can’t stop this no more so than they can militarizing Bio Weaponry. If one don’t do one’s opponent will.
