LSU pretty much gave itself the death penalty by hiring Matt McMahon

Its close between this guy and Curley Hallman as to who will go down in LSU history as the worst coach. Both set the LSU programs back big-time. At least when MM is fired maybe the next coach can use the portal to at least make LSU basketball competitive again. LSU was never a top tier national program but dam doesnt seem like we were bottom dwellers yearly in the sec either.

Not sure why administrators are giving him such a long rope. They have pulled the trigger on much more successful coaches with higher buy outs.

We weren’t bottom dwellers in sec before MM. even clowns like Trent and JJ managed to win here for a short period and Wade put together the most consistent winning since the mid brown years.
Overall we are in tier 2 of the conference with only Kentucky, Florida and Arkansas with clear better histories and Arky is hanging by a thread with a title from 30 plus years ago

This is not true.
Dale had LSU in the national spotlight back in the day for a period of time. We rivaled Kentucky in the SEC and the LSU v Ky games were must see tv.
We were on the big stage for awhile there. We played several of the big timers in ooc games. We had star players, All Americans.

Kevin Nickelberry was the interim head coach for the LSU men's basketball team when they played Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on March 18, 2022
I vaguely remember Kevin Nickelberry coaching LSU in our last trip to March McMadness. Seems like an eternity ago.

Went to the NCAA tournament 10 seasons in a row from 1984 to ‘93, and 13 of 15 from ‘79 to ‘93, making 2 Final Fours, 2 more Elite Eights and a Sweet 16. LSU was a top-tier national program for most of that stretch.
Made another Sweet 16 trip in ‘00, another FF trip in ‘06, and a Sweet 16 in ‘19 even in what’s been mostly a down 30 years plus. So this place can be more that the shite Brady, Johnson, Jones and McMahon put on the floor for most of that stretch.
Every coach but McMahon has made the tournament even if most of their tenures were shite. Even Johnson won an SEC title and an NCAA tournament game, and Jones made an NCAA tournament. So what McMahon has done is indefensible and inexcusable.

Johnny Jones actually recruited a team that ended up making the tournament. He also had some good wins during his time here including a comeback win on the road at West Virginia and a win over #10 ranked Marquette.
McMahon’s crowning achievement at LSU was getting lucky on a fluke play that beat Kentucky a couple of years ago.
Jones and McMahon are in two completely different leagues as far as I’m concerned.

There was a good stretch under Dale where we weren't quite elite, but every fan knew we were a major player in basketball.
Always among the finalists and signing HS AAs, packing the Superdome to the rafters for games, having sports center's lead story being "what did CJ do tonight " REGULARLY.
We were headed back there under Wade, and can still possibly rehire him or someone as good or better, and have us right back there quickly.

Yea anyone comparing Jones to McMahon isn't remembering correctly. His one truly awful season has been the norm under CMM.
Johnny's first 4 teams (Yes even the Ben Simmons team) would probably boat race CMMs teams. They were better at every aspect of the game.

Mark me Team Quarterman.
He may not have had the talent to ultimately put Ben in his place but he saw him for what he was all those years ago.

I think it was discussed recently on here, but that was one of the most dysfunctional teams ever. Can’t remember who posted it, but they seemed to actually hate each other.

Agreed. I’m so tired of people saying LSU has no basketball credibility or relevance. There was a time not so long ago when making the tourney wasn’t even a question. The only question was what the seed would be. You can be successful in basketball at LSU. You just have to say yes to the right people and no to the wrong ones.

There is no doubt Jones is just average while MM is bottom of the barrel. He recruited better, he also did manage to win more.
Even Trent is a higher tier than MM.

If Dale could have beat Bobby knight we would be even higher. Also should have beat an elite UK team but he has the Mardi Gras collapse.

It's a shame Wade left the program in shambles where we had no leverage.
