Elderly Lawmakers Won’t Step Aside, Prompting New Debate Over Age Limits

An aging political class in Washington is prompting fresh calls for forcing older officeholders to step aside in favor of younger faces.
Working well past retirement age is an area of rare bipartisan agreement in Washington. President Trump will turn 80 this year, and Joe Biden left office at age 82, both breaking Ronald Reagan-era records for age in office. In Congress, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) is 92 years old, while Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) is 87. It isn’t unusual for members to die on the job, as three did in 2025 alone.

In 2024, Rep. Kay Granger (R., Texas) spent many of the final months of her 28-year House tenure at a senior-living facility in Texas, including for a portion of the time she was chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) appeared confused at times and had to be pushed out of her role as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. She remained in office, dying in 2023 at age 90.
A YouGov poll released last month showed 73% of American adults think there should be a maximum age for the presidency, while 69% say that for the House and Senate.

Let’s not forget Federal judges while we’re talking.

Why do they keep electing these geezers?

Agree. Needs to be an age limit on President, Vice President, Congress and Supreme Court. 75 years old would be good...but hell...at least upon turning 80 they should be forced to go home. Don't care if they're in the middle of a term, beginning, whatever.

Louisiana is likely to send a 75 year old to congress next.
In this instance...if it kicks Cassidy to the curb...I'll accept it.

Agree.
But upon his 80th Birthday, his shite should be packed up and carried out of the Congressional offices. Louisiana can hold a special election.

It is a conundrum.
-age doesn't affect everyone the same, some experience mental capability loss in their 60s, some are solid into their 90s.
-going younger could cost wisdom
-sticking with older means that a young foreign leader could outthink your old leader.

Most of those people can’t retire. They’d get whacked if they did. Their owners tell them when they can quit.

Both parties are equally guilty of this. It’s pretty disgusting how these career politicians cling to power even though they’re completely ineffective in their positions.

Grassley is still mentally sharp.
WE have two 80's something judges in my district. Both are sharp mentally. One handled the Goon Squad case. Did just fine and that was pretty high profile.

I think term limits would help with the age thing.

They make sure the right "interests" maintain their access to taxpayer money.

I like how we need to make laws to thwart the will of the American people. They want old geezers. Let them have their old geezers.

Mental competency tests would be a better choice.

Isn’t it funny how most Americans agree on this yet we can’t affect change here? That’s an overwhelming majority that think there needs to be age limits but there are not. So… what’s really going on in this democratic republic of ours?

A Constitutional Convention of the States will bring the power back to the States through the changes authorized by the states. Frig' these people who "live" in DC as politicians who no longer serve the people.
The STATES Have the POWER and MUST use it!!

Article V
The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.

It's not the will of the people.
Money in politics, special interest groups and shenanigans have effectively locked the people out- we get to pick from their approved selections.

No need in age limits. Vote them out.
Don't be lazy. Vote them out.
Trump at 80 is better than a lot of people at 40.

The main issue is the Senate. They need to be returned to the states. The state legislature should get their power back.
Then you dont have the problems in DC

I do agree completely the Senators of each state should be elected by their respective state houses.
Right now, both DC house and senate members are being funded by the very same lobbying groups.
