If his team wins, Darnold will receive $178k and pay $249k to California in taxes for his time here, losing $71k.

If his team loses he gets $103k and still pays over $235k in taxes, losing $135k. I presume California is declaring victory, as his incentive to win is preserved.

If that's true the players union should insist no more SB's in Cali because that's insane.

Maybe I’m not following but none of that makes sense. Contact incentives wouldn’t be by the state the games are played in

The numbers also make zero sense

California has the highest income tax of any state, and the Super Bowl means 8 "duty days" in CA.
Taxes hit your annual comp.

Super Bowl winner bonus from NFL: $178K/player Sam Darnold's estimated CA taxes: $249K

@SportsTaxMan , @McCannSportsLaw have the breakdown for @Sportico .

OP works for sportico, was at forbes

Its based on his annual income. Divided by 8 working days.

That might be the dumbest thing if his base salary is extended into the playoffs. It should stop at the regular season and the playoff bonus is a whole seperate thing.

How is California taxing him on income already earned?

Looks like they’re dividing his annual income by 365 days and taxing him based on 8 days being worked in CA since the teams are there all week.

Why do players (and especially the players' union) agree to play in California at all, and especially under these circumstances?

Honestly surprised a player hasn't said "I'm not making the trip." He would get torched until people saw it was going to cost him money.
