2019 LSU could have put 7 guys on each side of the ball against 1899 Sewanee and still destroyed them. 1.5/10

Hard to argue against that record. But let's check the game film.

Yeah those 205 offensive linemen with those leather helmets would have held up. Lolol

It’s almost not even the same sport because it was way closer to rugby then.

In 1899 they had 3 downs to get 5 yards, or they could run backwards 20 yard to keep possession. Plus both field goals and touchdowns were worth 5 points. They actually kicked a lot which makes sense (foot ball)

Obviously you put both those teams on the same field together and it’s not even close to being a contest.

That being said….that is one hell of a season those 1899 Tigers had. I bet their fans back then had us much fun as we did in 2019.

I don't think the OP believes that that team could literally beat 2019 LSU.
But they were the most dominant team in history is what he's saying. The era is what it is. They can't help that

That’s being generous.

You’re kidding yourself if you think more than ONE of those linemen weighed over 200lbs.

Yes…all 2,000 of them. Atmosphere for college athletics was a little different back then.

0.92 ppg D is pretty solid.

Squeaker vs. Barners saved their season.

I bet they were beat up in November and December. Scores started getting closer.

Cumberland should have never been playing D1 schools.

With just 18 players, the team known as the "Iron Men" embarked on a ten-day, 2,500 mile train trip, where they played five games in six days. Sewanee had five shutout wins over Texas (in Austin), Texas A&M (in Houston), Tulane (in New Orleans), LSU (in Baton Rouge), and Ole Miss (in Memphis). Sportswriter Grantland Rice called the group "the most durable football team I ever saw." The road trip is recalled memorably with the Biblical allusion "...and on the seventh day they rested."

Stretch of 5 games in 6 days in leather helmets

Can't convince me this wasn't an early case study on CTE

Can't believe they let Auburn score 10 points. I hope the DC was fired.

So this means we are initiating OUR 1908 National Championship, our squad would have killed the 1899 Sewanee team. We were throwing at least 6-8 times a game. Sewanee had a terrible defensive backfield.

Their starting QB, William "Warbler" Wilson was 5'10" & 154lbs

Their largest Olineman was William "Wild Bill" Claiborne at 6'0" 190lbs

What do you think Tyler Shelvin would have done to these men?
