Kiffin really taking the Fertitta $ away from UH?

I’m shocked he isn’t just seeing who he can call to fix the situation.

There is a myth out there that if you're in the state of Texas you're magically infused with oil money.

I'm sure Sampson has been offered numerous jobs over the last 5-7 years at much bigger, richer programs, but has always stayed at Houston.

Well he did get OU put on probation, then got a 5 year show cause while at IU, so I guess there is a reason he is still at UH.

I’ve always assumed all successful MBB coaches atleast knew how to play the gray areas in recruiting. Really doubt we’ve scene an elite coach do it 100% by the book in 50 years. This includes them being hands off in negotiation while boosters fill that role. Might be my obsession with blue chips as a kid.

Didn’t they just get the number one football player for the 2026 class?
My take away from this is that uncle Tillman is spending more on the football team now that they have a good coach. Sampson crying to the media in hopes to drive up more donations.

Does any of that stuff really matter these days? Seems any string of rules, integrity or structure that was hanging on by a thread five years ago is all out the window now.

Cougar High just announced a 6.1 million loss in the athletics dept for 2025, but that’s improved on the 9 million loss in 2024
They are also having attendance problems
Fertitta gives them money but does anyone else?

There’re only about 30-40 D1 programs each year that don’t lose money and have to supplement from other university funds.

People way overestimate the power of large boosters and underestimate the power of be huge fan base.
It’s much easier to get $1000 from 100,000 people in the form of fees or small donations than it is to get $100 million from a billionaire.

Both of those were for too many phone calls to recruits, which we can all agree now is a stupid arse thing to punish. The reason he's still at Houston is because despite very low dead periods U of H basketball has plenty history and Sampson isn't willing to start over/going to get many looks at his age.

In football for sure. I live here and went to a game this year and there were more Texas Tech fans than UH. That's why I was so shocked when they brought so many folks to the bowl game.
Basketball draws pretty well. I also went to the Tech game a couple of weeks ago and it was packed and very loud.

Coach K was 100% clean, his players even attended classes and did their own work

His kid is coach in waiting. UH has a sucky fan base, it's nothing new. What u found interesting talking to an alum is that the football tickets are expensive but the hoops tickets are cheap, go figure.

Yeah it’s okay to lose but it’s worse to admit you’re poor

I think that's a fair assessment of the situation at UH in comparison to other schools of similar size. A&M and Texas have some big bag donors, but they also have a much larger pool of active donors. It's a different picture when you have a broad-based pyramid.
