On Jan. 26, 2026, NYPD officers in Queens responded to a 911 call for 22-year-old Jabez Chakraborty's mental health crisis (schizophrenia). He advanced on them with a kitchen knife despite commands to drop it; officers fired, critically injuring him. Body cam footage supports the police account. Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited Chakraborty in the hospital, met his family, and urged the DA not to prosecute, advocating for mental health treatment instead. He's proposing a Department of Community Safety to handle such crises with social workers, while NYPD manages violent situations.

Going to be a lot of dead social workers in NYC.

Mamdani and the knifer have something in common. They both believe you can attack and threaten the life of a cop and expect the cop to let you. Forget wat happened to the poor girl on subway from Ukraine when that freak with the knife killed her in just a few seconds. Insanity is the new norm. Strange as it seems there are those who actually believe a guy aggressively threatening the cops life with a knife in his hand should be coddled.

And we are still just a month in. It's going to be soooo fun watching that city get what they wanted.

I'm open to the idea of insane asylums with classical mental health treatments, such as shock.

They should put traditional Muslim attire on the Statue of Liberty.

A bigger embarrassment is that a majority of NYC citizens voted for him.

When someone calls about a family member in a mental health crisis, a mobile crisis team should be sent out; not the police. Unless of course, the person is committing a crime, then both should be called out. It’s not rocket science. It’s mental healthcare.

Obviously, it is rocket science for you. They might not have a knife when the call is made but when the social worker shows up and they get a knife, it's too late at that point.

FFS. You are dealing with people with mental health issues, people that are unpredictable with every decision they make. Better safe than sorry.

Good. Let NYC be the proof for liberals to finally understand this is a horrible idea and stop pushing this asinine bullshite at every turn. They’ll have nobody but themselves to blame.

As I said before, if a crime is being committed, then call both the police and mobile team out. Brandishing a gun or weapon in a mental health crisis is a crime.

Both Baton Rouge and New Orleans have a mental health crisis team. They get multiple calls and respond daily.
