Where is the line on St Charles where it turns from family friendly to ghetto?

Of course St Charles and MLK ...

But yeah, it starts getting sketchy at St Charles and Jackson..

We started catching everything on Magazine... Much more of a family atmosphere.

Starts to deteriorate gradually as you move downriver from Louisiana Ave.

ETA: For the parades using the long route, Magazine is by far the best place to watch.

Downriver of MLK for sure. Downriver of Jackson to be safe.

Improves once you the to Gallier hall for a few blocks.

In general, I wouldn't call mardi gras family friendly

But I would stay upriver from louisiana avenue if you want to avoid ghetto. Superior grill is a good landmark

What about parades isn't family friendly?

There are certainly places or events no doubt but it is a truly family friendly event.

Superior Grill area is not a good mark of a family friendly area to be.

I’ve had more issues with the college aged kids between Napoleon and Louisiana than any other demographic. They seem friendly until they can’t hold their alcohol.

I've only ever been with my family the week before but my wife is really wanting to go back this year the weekend of through fat Tuesday. I just don't know how much more of a cluster it's going to be

If you see the Claiborne overpass, you are a few blocks too far.

Same with the Spanish Town parade in Baton Rouge. Those college kids are the ones ripping decorations off our float every year.

Related question...we are coming to New Orleans during masters week to see a play at the Saenger- not sure which play but that is the reason we are going. My daughter is ATE up with busking. I am also a big fan of any street performer, even kids beating up 5 gallon buckets for about 10 minutes (after 72 hours of it I am not fond of it LOL). We are staying on Bourbon Street, 3 blocks from Canal. The last few times I have been to New Orleans the street musicians were pretty hard to find...I was told last year that they had to have a permit and play in designated areas and it was actually being enforced. I know the Jackson Square area used to have a bunch but last year during the Sugar Bowl they weren't any other than the kids and the buckets. Anyone have any idea where she and I are likely to find street musicians? If they are being forced to play in designated areas it seems like someone ought to publish those locations, no? Thanks in advance. We are going to go so the "yall are gonna be killed" comments are noted in advance....

excellent suggestion and the crowd is generally friendly and welcoming

And the others are right about parade geography, Jackson avenue is the boundary. The sweet spot is between Louisiana and Washington
