My work getting intense but the Mrs wants to go 2 weeks vacation twice this year. I’m a worker ant so a little bothered about spending a month off.

The P in PTO stands for personal.

Well if your wife wants you to leave your professional responsibilities to go frolicking around for a month you better do it you puss.

As much as you have. However, if you use it all and then tell me you need more unpaid then you can kick rocks.

They give it to you to use. Take the trips and keep the wife happy.

If you have that much PTO that means you earned that much PTO. Don't let your personal pride and work ethic get in the way of a once in a lifetime memory with your family, especially when these HR departments at most companies couldn't give two shits about you

If you don’t get paid it’s not PTO. McDonald’s isn’t paying you to stay home and not flip the burgers

What if I use three weeks and everything goes smooth in my absence. Do I want my employer to start thinking they can get along just fine without me?

Use what they give you, but 2 entire weeks twice a year may make you seem replaceable or un-needed.
Or tell your smarter half that you're going to have to "take some calls" (which I have done once in my life) if she wants to spend that much time away. Don't actually take any calls, but lock yourself in the room for stretches of time while she gallivants around spending money to make her feel guilty.

Unless you’re in the first year or two working there (in which case you wouldn’t have four weeks anyways), take the PTO they offer and you’ve earned.
When I was in college, I had an uncle tell me not to take any real time off for the first two years working somewhere. That advice is a little dated given not many people are planning on being lifers at one place anymore, but I get it.

I would have thought with your stock prediction ability, you would not have to work.
Doing a couple of 2 week vacations should not be a big deal, if you are important to your company. If you can be easily replaced, may the odds be ever in your favor.

Don’t ever be afraid to use your time off.
Everyone is completely replaceable at their job.
You will never get an award for not using your time off.
Memories in life are not made from never taking off time at work

Just do them 2-3 months apart. No decent company should fuss about that too much. If they do, you're more valuable than you think and need a raise.

Take a week off, nobody at work blinks.
Take two weeks off in a row, some people will talk.
Take two weeks off twice in a year? Everyone will talk.
But frick em if you can pull it off.

If you take the last two weeks of December, and another two weeks in the summer, yeah, nobody will pay attention. It doesn't sound like that's what his wife wants him to do.
I don't remember what industry he works in, but considering he's aggy, it's probably a stodgy arse company that has him in the office 4-5 days a week for no good reason.

I think taking time off is a form of negotiation.
First and foremost, if you have the time and want it, use it. There are some caveats though. If you are in a big project or know one will be due during that time, then maybe schedule your leave around it if you can. If not, just give a big advance notice that you will be taking it so management can plan accordingly.
Request 2 weeks off 1 month before a project that has been know all year is due and place the extra work on other co-workers... not okay.
Request 2 weeks off 6 months before you know a big project is due... okay.
At the end of the day, be considerate when requesting your time off but dont be scared to take it. The business is considerate by giving you time off to begin with. There are many companies and professions that do not offer PTO...
