Tim Legler calls out lack of effort in NBA: Teams are ‘borderline disinterested’

ESPN’s Tim Legler has been around the league for more than 35 years between his playing career and broadcasting work. And while there are numerous explanations for what has been a confusing NBA season — injuries, a new CBA, and legends on their way out — Legler believes a far more simple reason is a “tremendous fluctuation” in effort night to night.

Appearing on The Bill Simmons Podcast on Tuesday, Legler sounded the alarm on the malaise he is seeing even from top teams this year.

“The reason, I think is because … the guys being available, that’s been going on for awhile. The availability of players being as tumultuous as it is, that lends to some of this,” Legler explained.

“But I’ve also seen a tremendous fluctuation, the number of nights that I’ve seen teams either in-person when I’ve sat courtside calling a game or sitting at home on League Pass watching a game, the fluctuation in effort. There are nights when you watch teams where you can’t believe how flat they are. And I’ve seen more of that this year than any other time. Which means on any given night, anybody is capable of beating anybody.”

Legler added his concern that even highly anticipated games between top teams have ended up as duds because of how often players appear “borderline disinterested” on a night-to-night basis.

“I’ve seen more nights now where those teams have been flat,” Legler said.

“Even in a matchup where two really good teams are about to play and you’re super excited about the game, and for whatever reason they come out and one of them is so flat that it’s almost borderline disinterested. And it leads to these weird scores, these crazy results, some of these blowouts we’ve seen.”

NBA started clamping down on fake injuries. So now some players half arse it to basically rest in the game to avoid scrutiny. And team docs are creative in injury reports.

Legler is a clown. The mastery these guys display by shooting 3s all game is unmatched. Incredible to watch.

This has been a problem for decades.

Kareem didn't work hard enough on defense. And lots of times, he didn't even run down court. And he didn't really try... except during the playoffs.

Haven’t watched 5 minutes of NBA play in the last five years. So I wouldn’t know.

It’s way more Steph curry than LeBron that killed the NBA. All the league is now during the regular season is a competition on quasi-contested three pointers. That doesn’t really require guys to fully commit and be intense on a random night when all they’re going to do is go out there and shoot jumpers.

The three point explosion combined with the rules already designed to open up space in the paint and make it easy to score and all of the sudden everyone is on autopilot.

They need to lessen the number of regular season games, drastically increase the three point line and allow for more exotic defenses. But they won’t bc they think all people want are dunks and points

You try dragging Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 80 games.

So it’s not really a problem

The playoffs can’t be awesome without some regular season duds… it’s the dog days right now. Teams usually turn it up after the break

I think a lot of people default to LeBron or Steph but Harden is why the NBA is like it is today.

Even Steph and LeBron added a step back to their game. Harden and D’Antoni broke basketball in Houston.

Make pay performance based. That will make them work hard. It's hard to motivate some one who just signed a 40 million dollar contract to play 30 minutes a night.

I am friends with a radio play by play guy in the NBA. He said they don’t care about the regular season and for a lot of players basketball in general. Just going through the motions for the most part.

This was all started by Popovich and his resting players.

Went from rest to overaction with any injury, to now just disinterest on some nights.

It’s pretty hard when you’ve won life multiple times over with a single contract in a league that allows you to kind load around for a good chunk of the season.
