Dow to cut about 4,500 jobs as emphasis shifts to AI and automation

Dow is planning to cut approximately 4,500 jobs as the chemicals maker puts more emphasis on using artificial intelligence and automation in its business.
The company said Thursday that it anticipates about $600 million to $800 million in severance costs related to the cuts. Those costs are part of a broader plan aimed at simplifying operations and streamlining.
Shares of Dow Inc., which has about 34,600 employees globally, fell 2% before the market opened. Dow is based in Midland, Michigan.

There have been thousands of job cuts announced this week after a frustrating year for U.S. job seekers.
Amazon slashed about 16,000 corporate roles on Wednesday — just three months after laying off another 14,000 workers. And United Parcel Service said on Tuesday that it plans to cut up to 30,000 operational jobs this year.

Americans are feeling increasingly anxious about the odds of finding a job, or getting a better one. Economists have said that businesses are largely at a “no-hire, no fire” standstill. Hiring has stagnated overall — with the country adding a meager 50,000 jobs last month, down from a revised figure of 56,000 in November.

Consumer expectations for the U.S. economy has plummeted to its lowest level since 2014. That is occurring as some businesses reduce their workforces as they redirect money toward artificial intelligence, often baked into wider corporate restructuring.

Causing concern in the Houston area, Freeport specifically:
quote:
"Dow employs about 7,000 people at its site and also uses another 4,500 hundred contractors in the vicinity," said Andrew Lipow, President of Lipow Oil Associates Consulting Firm. "The loss of a significant number of jobs is going to be a big impact."
quote:
While specifics of how and where the layoffs will occur are unknown, the news isn't good for small business owners in Freeport.
"I know a lot of people who work at Dow," said Ivan Isais, owner of Stay Faded King's Barbershop. "I hope they're safe. Dow brings a lot of customers to us."
FOX 26 spoke to Freeport Mayor Jerry Cain. He told us, "We have not received info on the specific impacts on Freeport. We will continue to monitor the situation."

People thought AI was going after the blue collar jobs but in reality it's the pencil pushers being shown the door first.

We’re going to automate ourselves into a social crisis of highly qualified, intelligent people having nothing to do or any way to feed themselves. I’m sure they will just peacefully protest and not use their intellect and creativity to cause any disruption to society.

You mean to say people then rely on either side of a looming civil war to provide compensation for families of soldiers? It’s like this was planned or something.

This is why we have to reshore the supply chain and move jobs back here as fast as we can. The announcements by GM and the aluminum smelting plant just announced are two examples. AI will kill jobs, tariffs will bring more to replace them.

That’s white collar and management level jobs.

What would change? In fact, it may contract even further when these Suits vomit the same lame talking point of "shareholder value ", but "produce" in America.
It's over for our kid's kids. I don't know what they're going to do. They all can't be tradesmen. Would be so many, a housecall will be $5.99 to show up.

Invest. Invest. Invest.
AI is going to change business forever.

What, you weren't expecting AI plumbers?

This isn’t a situation of “another industry will rise up to fill the empty space” either.
Why wouldn’t AI take those jobs too?
In the words of Malcolm: We were so preoccupied with whether or not we could, we didn't stop to think if we should.
This mass rush to AI will be brutal.

We got a LOONNNGGG way to go before that. I had a plumber that charged me $200+ just to come out and look at what needed to be done. Was only a jr plumber and still had to call the main guy to ask questions. Then paid another $700 after. We need more tradesmen NOW! Plus I think a lot of people are holding off on house work due to labor costs right now. More labor would only open up more jobs as prices dropped.

I keep thinking about Zuckerberg on Rogan a year ago. There was a point where they finally landed on AI and started to open up. JR of course rambled about sentient AI but luckily, they talked a bit about job automation, efficiency, replacement etc. And Zuck, even perhaps by mistake or feeling trapped, said some things about goals which would widely replace workers in you-name-it categories. Because their first goal is to produce "mid-level AI engineers" who do nothing but code. Which will code to myriad industries, sectors, categories whatever you choose to call it.
I'm going to watch it again today as I don't quite recall what their discussion on Universal Basic Income was, but what made me shiver was when he said "this will give people time to finally enjoy new hobbies. Become more creative". Just flippant about it.

Yeah, I've got one about to start college. It's pretty difficult to help guide her into what career path to take. I have no idea what the employment market will look like for her.

No kidding. Have any of y'all had landscaping quoted recently? You would think neurosurgeons are coming here to put out mulch. We'll just do it ourselves, thanks.
People hate to admit this, but we have way too many people sitting in cubicles doing brainless and meaningless work. Office Space was a cautionary tale and not intended to be a playbook.
