Here's why I didn't vote for Bill - Vahe Gregorian

Bill Belichick belongs in the Hall of Fame. But here’s why I didn’t vote for him - Kansas City Star
tldr - Didn't vote for Bill because some senior candidates and Bill will get in eventually
quote:
Separate from the vote-down of modern era candidates from 15 to as many as five, the aspect involving Belichick illogically lumps together in one category the coaching candidate, the contributor candidate (in this case, Patriots owner Robert Kraft) and three seniors (we’ll come back to those). Voters can choose three of the five at most, and an 80% approval (40 votes) is needed for any to go forward.
One simple way to consider this: Under a setup that should be separate and distinct, even Belichick and Kraft essentially are in competition.
quote:
ESPN’s piece heavily suggests that Deflategate and Spygate and “politics” led to this situation, and it quotes a veteran Hall voter as saying, “The only explanation (for the outcome) was the cheating stuff. It really bothered some of the guys.”
Perhaps that affected some voters, perhaps not. I can’t and won’t try to speak for others, and it’s a condition of being a voter to not divulge the deliberations.
But the so-called “cheating stuff” is not at all the only possible explanation. Because it certainly didn’t ultimately influence my vote.
In fact, I didn’t vote against Belichick or Kraft. I voted for the three senior candidates: Ken Anderson, Roger Craig and L.C. Greenwood.
quote:
All of that went into why I felt duty-bound to vote for the richly deserving seniors, who most likely won’t ever have a hearing again as more senior candidates enter the pool and fresh cases get made for others. Meanwhile, Belichick is inevitable soon … as he should be.
At the risk of contradicting my own vote, really, he shouldn’t even have to wait. I understand why people are offended that he isn’t going in the first moment he can.
In the end, though, I felt more compelled by what I perceive to be last chances and looming lost causes within the system as we have it — a system I hope the Hall will see fit to change now.

Stupid but at least he owned his vote I’ll give him that

The roger Craig argument is puzzling to me, only had 1000 yards 3 times in a season and never had 10+ touchdowns.
This is the embodiment of hall of very good, the fact people are crying he has to be in ahead of arguably the goat coach is wild

Sports writers sure love to smell their own farts.
One of the best things about Bobby Knight is how he hated those whores and let them know it.

He was the first and only RB to rush and run for 1000 /1000 in a season, until Marshall Faulk did it later. He was a good fit in a great offense. Borderline HOF but was probably more a product of the offense than the other way around like Faulk.

league offensive mvp in 1988 and 4 probowls.
He led the league in receptions in 1985.
He's a running back.
He had two seasons where he had 2000+ rushing/receiving yards
first player to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same year. This feat has still only been done twice, by Marshall Faulk and McCaffery.
SHould he be in teh hall of fame? maybe, maybe not, but he's definitely in the conversation and he was a guy who did something no one else was doing at the running back position, and changed the way that position could be played.
Thurman Thomas only has two seasons of a combined 2,000 yards from scrimmage. He's in the Hall of Fame. He's got just one offensive mvp, like Craig, and 5 pro bowls, and doesn't have 3 super bowl rings. Thomas played 2 more years than Craig, but Craig averaged more yards per touch than Thomas did.

Can we agree HOF voters are the most self righteous jerks in sports? We should let AI pick HOF'ers at this point.

Roger Craig, LC Greenwood and Ken Anderson is a pretty damn good Hall of Fame ballot. But you should not have a system that keeps out no-brainer first-ballot choices.
I don’t know if y’all have looked at the voting system but it’s a complicated mess. It needs to be fixed and I imagine it will be.

Everyone keeps focusing on who Vahe didn't vote for, but this is the actual point he was trying to make.

I gotta be honest that’s one of the douchiest things I’ve read in a while

So he decided to make a point instead of doing the job he was tasked to do?
I'm sorry, but those senior guys have to keep waiting when there are surefire candidates up for the HOF. Those guys weren't good enough to get elected for years and aren't suddenly good enough, now.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not like baseball where Anderson, Craig, and Greenwood fall off a ballot and cannot be considered again.

Here’s a good piece from CBS that outlines the voting process and has a complete list of the voters. 22 of them said they voted for BB. The subject of this thread is the only one who said he didn’t. 27 others haven’t said or aren’t saying.

As others have pointed out, the rushing stats don’t tell the whole story. Guy is long overdue for being in the Hall of Fame, because of the player he was. He was a key offensive piece to the dynasty of his time as a runner, receiver and blocker.
It’s not the “hall of very good”…but it’s not the “hall of statistical benchmarks” either.

Well at least he had the guts to admit he didn't vote for him but still think it's BS.

How to vote for HOF candidates ...
Vote first for the locks and obvious ones. Like Belichick.
See how many more slots -- pick the remaining best ones without personal bias to fill the slots.
I can't stand Belichick but it's beyond obvious he should be in the HOF.

Who out of LC Greenwood Roger Craig or Ken Anderson was charged with murder?

As it came time to cast the vote, I found myself thinking not just of them but of the experiences of recent senior semifinalists and finalists who didn’t make it.
Especially several for whom I’ve repeatedly advocated:…
and Jim Tyrer, whose candidacy resurfaced after being dormant for decades because of increasing awareness of the ravages of CTE and near-certainty he was in its clutches when he murdered his wife and killed himself in 1980.
He “repeatedly” advocated for this murderer

Ok but that’s not why he did not vote for Belichick or Kraft so…..
