It's so ridiculous. It's not like Geddy is telling him what to play, he's just leaning into it and going gold.

As a guitar player, imagine in the room with Geddy Lee and Neal Pert, and not just holding your own, but going mahem.

Alex is very underappreciated.

Yeah, when you're in a band with 2 guys who are prodigies in 3 instruments, it is easy to get lost in the wash by being merely an "awesome" guitar player.

Sort of a preview of the 80s. The front men (and a few others) got all the press during the hair metal days, but most of those axe men could flat out fricking play.

Naah. He always gets included in rankings and lists.

Guys like Rik Emmett of Triumph or Ian Crichton of Saga deserve more respect, though.

This.
In any group of musicians, you have the most dominant (Peart) to the least dominant (Lifeson).
I don't use "dominant" as a synonym for "strongest", or most competent.
I use it instead as an indicator of dynamics.
Peart drove the songs with the rhythm and percussion, Geddy tied that to the texturing of the keyboards and guitar with his percussive, yet melodic, bass lines, and Alex punctuated the whole song with lush chords and killer solos.
The "Chemistry" of RUSH is the key to their sound.....(pun intended)

Geddy built most of the music. Structure, notes, progressions, etc. All meticulous songcrafting. What Al did was come up with cool parts to add in or start out building around. He and Geddy are very different but together and then adding those damn drums made for magic.

Alex is like many of my favorites where they are in a trio or foursome and are the guy. Gotta be excellent in rhythm and lead playing.

Anyway, the solo in this one is blistering and may be my favorite

But, just from a magic POV and not about fretboard gymnastics, this is amazing to listen to and perfectly fits the mood of the lyrics.
(And I know he had The Wall on the turntable a lot when he wrote it)

All the way back to Caress of Steel, RUSH and Alex Lifeson has amazed me and he has always been one of my guitarists idols.

Crazy solo in yyz. Let me just throw some Phrygian mode in there and make it sound awesome.

No… and yes. When Alex goes to record solos, he does a few passes. He then leaves and Geddy comps the solo from the various passes.

That said, Alex is brilliant. But to call him the “most underappreciated” is a Far Cry.

Alex always comes up with the perfect guitar sound for a given song, and the perfect solo for a given song, and perfect riff.

His lead guitar phrasing is always perfect.

His lead guitar dynamics are always perfect.

Clapton, Blackmore, Iommi, Gilmour, Eddy VH, George Harrison, Eric Johnson....and Alex Lifeson all have that talent.
