How much did the automobile market correct?

We tried to trade in my parents 1 yr old honda pilot and they wanted to give $19k less than they bought it for. 7k miles on it. Are

Didn't Honda just redesign the Pilot, that could be driving the price down further. I know you lose value the second you drive a new car off the lot but, otherwise, $19k sounds like a drastic drop.

I was looking online and they werent too far off. Parents may have originallly overpaid though for their pilot

If the pilot is only a year old, then it's the newest design. They redesigned them for 2023.

It looks like the 2026s got a facelift, but it is the same body style.

Of course not. Depending on the model a used 4x4truck with low miles and a decent trim package is going for the same price as a used Lexus GX.

If you're turning cars that quickly, you ought to lease, IMHO. It is a very, very, very expensive way to satisfy basic transportation needs. Particularly if you're paying a Honda premium up front (they charge more because they last longer).

Theyre old and found it was too big for them. Wanted to go back to a smaller sedan

Fair enough, but there's no way to make that decision not expensive. I get they might be lowballing you, but that's the deal with a trade in vs private sale. Convenience versus max value.

Are you including the out the door price they paid including tax, fees, warranty, any negative equity rolled, etc...
Thats the only way it should be $19k less than what they bought it for. Pilots hold their value extremely well. If the VEHICLE ONLY (meaning what the vehicle was negotiated to sell for before fees, taxes, destination, warranty, etc) price was $47k for example, they shouldn't be getting anywhere close to a $28k trade in offer after 1 year and 7 k miles; it should be a hellva lot closer to probably $40k according to KBB, the dealer would turn that around to $43k-$44k listing probably.
I looked up a 2025 Pilot Touring (MSRP $47.5k originally) w/7,000 miles on it in very good condition and the range for TRADE in is $40k-$42k.
There's no way they should be offering like $28k-$29k on that. They are getting played big time.
Use kelly blue book and prices of similar trims/mileage on used market to negotiate. Every dealer says kbb is wrong but its not when you support the fact they are listing similar used Pilots on top of that. Gotta come prepared with ammo. Dont ever go in blind to a stealership. They will absolutely steal from you and make you think you're getting the best deal.

More than likely yes on the expensive warranty. I was only in for a weekend and they were set on this one delership and they thought they were great because the owner was an “AU guy”. I had to jump in and stop them from making the deal after being there for 10 minutes. They are naive and think the best of everyone. I made sure we left there quickly. But i have not been with them on their previous trips like when they purchased the pilot. I feel certain they were taken advantage of on the original purchase. They are supposed to call me before making any big decisions now

You can get a pro-rata refund for an unused auto extended warranty by contacting the warranty provider or the selling dealership to cancel the policy. Refunds are based on remaining time or miles, minus any paid claims and potential administrative fees. If financed, the refund usually goes to your lender.

Not what I’m seeing in the used car market
Looking to spend about $15k on a truck for my son…. For a mid sized (or whatever you call it) frontier, Colorado, Canyon- you’re at about 10 years old and 130-150k miles.

Buy that baw an early 2000's Silverado or Sierra. Bulletproof platform and will go 300k miles. Barely larger than a "midsize" today.
