Watch as a NASA research jet made a belly landing when it bursted into flames at after its landing gear apparently failed to deploy
#Houston | #Texas
Watch wild footage captured after a NASA WB-57 research aircraft was forced to make a belly landing at Ellington Airport in Houston, Texas, after its landing gear reportedly failed to deploy when it landed flames and sparks can be seen coming from the jet. Emergency responders quickly rushed to the scene as the pilot safely exited the cockpit. NASA later confirmed that a mechanical issue led to a gear-up landing involving one of its WB-57 aircraft. All crew members are safe, and no injuries were reported. Officials say a full investigation into the cause of the incident is underway, with updates to be released as more information becomes available.

Today, a mechanical issue with one of NASA’s WB-57s resulted in a gear-up landing at Ellington Field. Response to the incident is ongoing, and all crew are safe at this time. As with any incident, a thorough investigation will be conducted by NASA into the cause. NASA will transparently update the public as we gather more information.

I don't know anything about planes or belly lands but that looks like an impressive effort to me. Well done

Held together well, pilot was probably thinking it was going over any second.

Agreed, that has to be the smoothest "crash landing" in history. Exceptional work by the pilot.
I assume everybody onboard was okay?

According to Wiki, there are (or were) only 3 operational WB-57’s, one of which was mothballed for 40 years and was refurbished back in 2013

That plane never “ bursted into flames “.

That pilot deserves a raise and a long vacation.

Those were the old Vietnam-era Canberra bombers that Martin built under license from English Electric. They were modified for high-altitude recon work which is why NASA snatched them up for weather research. But yeah, those birds were rode hard and put away wet.

That won’t bode well for crawfish prices.

Bodes amazing for the Artemis II launch in a few weeks
I'd be terrified to get in any non-SpaceX craft these days.

Reportedly? Youre still not sure?

Was watching them fly around in circles during lunch today. Went to flightaware and confirmed it was the WB. Figured they must have been doing touch- and-goes. Looks like that last one didn't go so well.

Amen. That's about as butter as a belly landing can be.
