Do you have a smoke detector in your attic?

I said this in the GMT but thought it deserved its own thread.

Last night my dog woke me up to the smell of smoke coming from my attic. My heater is in my attic and it caught fire. Luckily we caught it early so no damage except to the heater itself.

But my hallway smoke alarm never went off. If I’d had one in my attic I wouldn’t had had to depend on my dog to alert me to something wrong.

Do they work well up there? Does the temperature mess with them? My garage has always been of a concern because of the batteries for my tools but I’m under the impression smoke detectors don’t do well in garages. The sawdust, exhaust, temperature swings, etc messes with them I think? If I’m wrong I’ll definitely put them in both places.

Something I hadn’t considered. I’ll look for a temperature resistant one.

I bet dust does mess with their sensors.

According to Google you should use heat detectors in the attic
quote:

Unfinished/Unconditioned Attics: Use heat detectors (fixed temperature or rate-of-rise) rather than smoke detectors.

My brother (who works for the fire department) is recommending ones that are interconnected so I’ll hear it.

The more troubling thing is who the hell downvoted this post? Somebody's face needs a downvote.

I know that bugs can set a smoke detector off… I feel like they would be going off all of the time in the attic or garage.

I have a heat detector in my attic that is tied into my alarm system. I had them put one up there when I updated my alarm system.

Now I have a new anxiety. How often do attic heaters/furnaces catch on fire? What would cause that?
