Just got into upland bird hunting with gun dogs (where has this been my whole life??)
Would like to get a finished GSP that is ready for anything.
Any recommendations on a good breeder and any other advice?
Thanks

Good choice. I don't know shite about breeders down there but if you aren't already active, you will be.

I hope you live on a nice chunk of property and have a ton of energy.

Six Hitch Farms is a great place. Most people swear by them.

I have a GSP that I bought from a guy in Monroe. His dogs were from G&S gun dogs in Alto, TX. He has a ton of energy. He's 6 and has mellowed out a ton. Plays fetch with relentless energy. Had him tracking deer when he was a puppy but life got busy and we stopped. I think he would pick anything up really quick with the right trainer.

Listen to me and listen to me good. You will be tempted by local dogs, there are a few good breeding's that happen in Louisiana, there are some good dogs but very few finished dogs for sale. For the most part you need to travel to get the dog with the potential that you are looking for in a dog. You will spend money but a well breed GSP is a great companion at the house and in the field, and a bad is, well pretty damn bad. Pick the traits you want in a dog and then find the breeders that produce those dogs. Don't go buy an all age field trail dog if you are hunting thick stuff in Louisiana. If you duck hunt from time to time get one with strong retrieving and water.

Buying finished will take away the guessing of potential but depending on the level of finished, expect to pay $5k-$8k,

It's a shame the guy that produced some great ones here is no longer in the GSP game.

Currently have a six hitch and have had other respectably bred GSPs.

Six hitch dog is the best listener I’ve ever seen in a GSP. She’s just over a year. Super easy training and picked up on the basic commands with ease.

I’m not really all that interested in hunting with her just because of time and we got her to be more of a pet in the family. I have no doubt she could pick up on
whatever hunting I want her to do. Currently I’m just having fun getting her to chase and tree squirrels.

I would encourage you to look at your local no-kill shelters. They are overflowing with beautiful pitbull terrier mixes that would great benefit from a home. I guarantee in a year you won't care what breed of dog it is you'll love it so much.

Wick, do you have any breeders you can recommend?
Definitely willing to travel and pay those kind of prices for a finished dog.

I've heard good things about Six Hitch Farms near Folsom, LA.

ETA: Already mentioned several times in this thread.

My GSP doesn't hunt but he is one lovable, loyal, goofy, family loving bastard

He runs about 7-9 miles a day around my property.

Great dogs! I have one. Basically agree with everyone above. I bought mine locally that I found on Facebook of all places. AKC and all that. She’s been a great dog in the field and at home. She’s my first bird dog. My next one I’ll probably get from a reputable breeder but as a pup, not finished.

But buying a finished dog in Louisiana would be tough. I’d definitely travel and find a breeder/trainer where upland hunting is more prevalent.

What type of birds do you want to hunt? What do you mean by “ready for anything”?

Man they’re fun, I have two. Thanks Wick. I have a ton of property and they have free run. When I kept the GPS collars on them they were doing over 10 miles a day even in the heat of the summer. Right now in this weather I let them out 2 hrs ago. They occasionally show up to check in at the back door but they’re out running around again right now. Haven’t seen them in 35 minutes. Starting to get dark so I’m about to go whistle for them. They’re amazing

Getting a GSP will be one of the great joys of your life- I got fascinated with them hunting in Argentina.

When we decided to get one, I hit the GSP lottery- single mom, 3 kids, 2 dogs, 4 cats, and some chickens living in an HOA in South Carolina. Lady and boyfriend split, dude shags arse- it was “his” dog according to the lady. She said “he’s well bred, we looked all over the country for this dog but I can’t take care of him” She tried to give it back to the breeder- imagine how that went?

I took a chance, flew to SC with my wife- this poor lady opens the door, my wife gets about knocked over by a Weimaraner and Murphy the GSP. I see her kitchen table is knocked over along with two chairs. My wife about shits and I think nearly told me to get my arse back in the rental and we could just fly back.

I snapped my finger, called his name and he sat down right next to me.

That’s been 6 months ago, and he hasn’t really left my side.

Dude absolutely misses me when I leave for the day and hugs me when I come home. Everyone in this house is smitten by him. He’s had some bird training and we continue to work on that. He might be the most chill GSP in the world.

I think the GSP horror stories come from people who think they are cool, but have no idea that they are people level intelligent- and need interaction. We run with ours, love on him like he’s one of our own children, bring him all over- he can run the whole length of Grand Isle…from the state park to Bridgeside and never miss a beat. He goes offshore with me. We think he may be ready to go in the duck blind with us next year.

Truly a blessing to have a GSP…just be ready for the velcro part. It might be one of their best attributes. Oh, and the not stinking and not shedding part is a huge plus.

I got a female while stationed overseas in the Azores Islands. Quail season was Oct-Dec and you could only hunt on Thursdays and Sundays. I never understood that. These quail are smaller than a Bobwhite but lo9k a like. I've heard them Japanese Quail. Limit was 30 a day and it was pretty easy to get a limit. My dog pointed and retrieved 100s of quail in my 4 years there. She also did a fine job retrieving wild pigeons. Season open all year with no limit. I thought her nothing, she was a natural. She had 2 faults. When a quail flush3d she broke point. Had to hold up shooting a few times so I would hit her. Number 2, any water from a mud puddle to the Atlantic Ocean she was in it. She was also a great pet. She lived to 17. Name was Sniffer. She lived for 17 years. Been gone almost 30 years and I still miss her.
