Don’t see it posted

Currently in football there are 7 championships, now will be 8. Additionally private schools were classified based on a 1.35 multiplier, that will no longer be the case.

quote:

The 2026-27 and 2027-28 breakdown for each football classification is as follows: Class 6A (32); Class 5A (64); Class 4A (66); Class 3A (66); Class 2A (65); Class 1A (69); Private Class Double A (17); and Private Class Single A (43). Indian Springs is listed as a Double A private school but does not participate in football.

If they’re splitting it up to that extent, what’s the point of even having playoffs? If you “win,” what are you really champion of? I don’t understand what they’re trying to do.

So there are “state public school champs” as opposed to “state private school champs.” What’s the point here? It’s not like Alabama has a huge number of private schools. Nor do I sense that there is a big recruiting issue out there. So up and down the line of all sports we are going to have separate playoffs for public and private? Even though the teams will keep playing each other in the regular season. SMH.

The private schools have two classes. The “bigger” schools one has 17 total throughout the state. The smaller has 43. Just to give a small snapshot of how fricky it is, the 2A private schools will have only 2 regions with 8 or 9 teams (the public schools have about the same number per region, just with many more overall regions). One region has teams from Huntsville to Auburn in it. That’s a 3.5 hour drive for a region game. No one really knows how it is going to work, but it was sprung on the private schools as it happened without any of their input.

I’ve heard it is in response to a recent law passed that will allow parents to apply for up to $7K per child of state tax revenue to help pay for private schools. The private schools were already doing well in winning championships in lots of different sports.

How is that different from Louisiana’s system?

In Louisiana public and private compete together. Regular season and playoffs. Right?

Been this way a long time in Tennessee. The private schools are Div 2 with theee classes. The biggest schools - Class AAA - only have 12 schools separated into East and West. Schools routinely travel between Nashville and Memphis or Nashville and Knoxville for regular season games.

Didn’t know that. So the New Orleans Catholic schools don’t compete in the playoffs with the public schools?

I don’t understand it, either. Private schools aren’t really relevant in Alabama football and basketball with the exception of a small handful of schools in the mid-tier classes, and the one that’s actually any good there is about to lose its coach to the NFL. Every single one of the big dogs in 6A and 7A are public. It isn’t like Louisiana or Kentucky or Ohio or Illinois where privates are uber competitive powerhouses in the biggest classes.

This is how it will work in AL too. Teams can still play games that “count,” in the regular season, it playoffs will be separate.

Louisiana has been doing this for over 10 years.

You have some teams making the playoffs with only 2 or 3 wins.

They are becoming more so. 2 out of the 7 champs this year were private schools.

Trying to work in the flow of money/students from public to private, trying to answer the transfer question/legislation, trying to satisfy rural public schools that can't compete in certain sports and/or football, trying to do this, trying to do that.

Nobody's happy, so everybody wins, I guess.

If a school accepts students from outside of its assigned attendance district, they play in the Select playoffs. This includes private schools, public magnet schools, and public charter schools.

Here in GA, the private schools that are at least 3A play in the "regular" playoffs but all the smaller private schools have their own playoff bracket.

One private school classification in the state where I live is 6 teams. In the entire state! It’s really 4 teams because the two most influential schools always make sure one or two of the teams are patsies. Yet, they still call themselves state champs in sports. It’s a joke. It’s not even a small district in most places. Those schools were formed in the 60’s after desegregation. Now those same schools constantly recruit black kids out of the hood and somehow they always can magically afford the 20k/year tuition.

Yep. I’m more surprised there are states that don’t split them up. The privates in Tennessee are closer to college than high school. It would be an absolute blood bath with the public’s.

The original proposal for Louisiana split was 4 public, 2 select.

Privates lost their shite, fought to stop split then saw the writing on the wall and demanded 4 divisions.

The reason we see watered down 1st/2nd round playoffs is bc the select schools wanted it that way.
