Okay, I've never hear of the Chagos Islands, and that the UK was giving them to anyone. Can someone explain situation to me like I was Joe Biden?

The uk wants to give the island to Mauritius and lease back the base.

We have a joint British/U.S. base there in the middle of the Indian Ocean called Diego Garcia. It is absolutely vital for arial and maritime force projection into both the Middle East and Asia. I'm generally not for imperialism, but I would support telling both the U.K and Mauritius to kick rocks and that we're keeping it. It's THAT important.

The interesting part here is that Marco Rubio praised the UK-Mauritius agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands as a "monumental achievement," noting it secured the long-term operation of the critical Diego Garcia military base. But then Trump, who as we all know never hits submit on a tweet without deep reflection on what he is tweeting, called it incredibly stupid on the UK's part. . So it would appear that Trump and Rubio are very much at odds on this issue.

Its worse than that.
The only major US base in the Indian Ocean is there.
The island was discovered and settled by Europeans.
They brought slaves later who lived there and now Identify as the Chagos people.
Then during the cold war all civilians were moved to other places
Some woke Chinese paid international judge said that the islands really belonged to a completely different pro Chinese country Mauritius.
The British then tried to give our airbase and a lot of money (Billions over 99 years) to this country.
The Chagos people are half in England where they live well and half in Mauritius where they are oppressed.
The British were going to rent the base that no one from Mauritius ever had a connection to except a few Chagos people who dont want Mauritius to own it.
The Chagos people in England do not want Mauritius to have it.
Woke insanity that was going to lead to China having a strike force next to our only base in the area.

Or, the growing closeness between China a Mauritius was a factor that changed the views of Rubio and Trump.

CHAGOS SURRENDER UPDATE
Labour has just pulled Monday’s vote in the House of Lords. The @Conservatives had put out a three-line Whip - an exceptional step in the Upper House, taken perhaps once every three or four years - and ministers evidently concluded that their Bill would fall.
We have secured a breathing space. It is now up to Trump and the people around him. If the president sticks to what he said this week, the deal is off. If he allows himself to be talked around by the State Department’s permanent officials, it will come back.
In any event, the man who deserves credit for winning the parliamentary battle, almost completely outside the public eye, is Lord @MartinCallanan, who led for the Tories. In terms of procedure, he played an absolute blinder, drawing things out expertly to give opponents time to organise.
I am proud of all those who were involved in the campaign, especially Claire and the @GreatBritishPAC. And, most of all, of the Chagossians themselves. Thank you. Mersi ek felisitasion
It is, I admit, a humiliating thing for Britain that the final decision should be in the hands of our American allies. We ought to have put a stop to the whole business ourselves.
Still, for the first time in 14 months, I am starting to think we might win.

I said this the other day.
If the Brits want to give it to Mauritius, fine. We “invade” Diego Garcia the next day, kick the Brits out, and dare someone to remove us.
