Shady tactics from dealership “service advisors“

Virtually all of them get paid by commission, at least a big portion of their paycheck.

They typically exaggerate the urgency of something minor on a “multi point inspection“.
Pushing expensive “maintenance packages” that aren’t due, or recommending repairs based on vague “caution” flags rather than a real problems—all to boost their paycheck and at the expense of your wallet, if you listen and follow their recommendations.


I’ve had experiences where I knew exactly what the problem was and they’re either trying to upsell or tell me it’s another problem, which of course is more expensive. When bringing my auto in for an unrelated issue, I even had one red flag and strongly recommend control arms when a recent inspection by a very reputable mechanic shop, along with video of their inspection, showed the control arms were fully intact and not in need of any replacement or maintenance.

The only upside is that you can sometimes get a “loaner car“

I’m sure there are others with similar experiences. Do tell.

They tried to sell me new lug nuts for $100 when I took my truck in for an oil change last week. I almost laughed in their face.

Years ago, I was between jobs, and went through training at Toyota, they flat out admitted that they give free oil changes (tire rotations) so they can get your car in to find other issues.

So you spend 45-75K buying a vehicle from them and their only thought is "how can frick this guy over".

Fortunately for me a "real" job became available before I had to start selling.

Yep. Had a conversation with a mechanic at Firestone (who can be guilty if the same) who used to work at a dealership. He confirmed. He also confirmed that dealerships often just throw fixes at something in hopes that it “might“ fix it. If it doesn’t, the customer still ends up having to pay what needed to be fixed in the first place.

Recently had my engine replaced as part of warranty with Hyundai. Get the car back and ac doesn’t work. Their tech cut/broke the power cord on the compressor. They told me I need a whole new one and is was just coincidence that it stopped working while they had it and not in use. Was at dealership 3 weeks as part of replacement.


Ended up having to go independent mechanic to find the cut wire and fix and then fight dealership to reimburse. They went so far as saying I did it and then complained how much the mechanic charged for the repair. However they had no problem with charging me $4k for a new compressor that they caused

This happened to me… some brake issue on my van. Spent over 5k before it was all said and done. Had I known all that at the time, I’d have taken it elsewhere or just bought another vehicle.

Thives.

Went in for a "free" oil change on a 6 month old car.

They said I had a bent frame and the cost for repairs would be $800.
Car was never in an accident.
I must look real dumb to them.
Left and never went back.

A couple of inconsequential dummy lights (related to limited slip in icy weather, in south La.) were flickering on my dash for a couple years until I stopped at dealership and asked to check for a loose electrical connection. Service department told the alternator was failing and I needed $1700 replacement, although I had my mechanic try to ID the problem just a week before and knew the alternator was working fine. Other Toyota dealership confirmed the issue was a bad electrical connection related to replacing solenoid years ago.

I try to avoid the dealership service department as much as possible.

I try to find a local mechanic who can do warranty work. Which is much better than bringing my truck to the dealership, having it sit around for two weeks only for them to tell me they couldn't recreate the issue.

And asking them for a loaner car is like asking to sacrifice their first born to Moloch.

My stepdaughter bought a demo car from a dealership a couple years ago and got a package with free oil changes/tire rotation, etc. when she bought it.

Every time she goes to the dealership for them to do that maintenance, they ALWAYS tell her she "Really needs this and that done" or she could wind up broke down on the side of the road-------and wouldn't you know, each thing they say needs to be done costs several hundred dollars to do.

They see a woman with a car and they are like vultures in a tree wanting something to die so they can feast.

Dealerships sell cars to get the service work. Then they just hire parts changers. Outside of warranty work, i never use dealerships.

Firestone does the same shite. Every time I’d take my vehicle to them they had something that needed to be fixed immediately for at least $500. I’d take it to my mechanic later and they’d never mention it
