People who don't understand how Trump negotiates calling Greenland deal a failure

Trump always throws the most absurd deal he can out to start the process

Chaos ensues and everyone freaks out while Trump stands strong and puts more pressure on

After kicking and screaming the other side comes to the table and Trump gets a deal. The deal may be exactly what he truly wanted or more than he wanted but a deal is always made

If only Trump had written a book decades ago that details his negotiating strategy, then people might be able to use that to counter him

Details have started to emerge about the US "purchase" of Greenland. It wasn’t exactly a purchase, but it was an EXCELLENT deal that includes:

1) Denmark must continue paying the Greenland population 600 million dollars per year.

2) The US gains sovereignty over any parts it wants for American military bases.

3) The US will have access to the entire Arctic Circle.

4) The US obtains the mineral exploration rights.

5) China and Russia are not permitted to enter Greenland.

6) The US will continue to be part of NATO in exchange for all of this.

More details are expected to be released soon by Marco Rubio.

That sounds like an incredible deal for the US and a terrible deal for Denmark/EU.

Well done Trump.

I agree that Trump’s "crazy man" negotiating style can be effective, but, so far this description of "a deal" seems sketchy.

Trump announced that a framework for the deal had been reached in his discussion with the Dutch, head of the military alliance NATO. NATO doesn't have any say over almost any of the things announced in that Portuguese post.

It actually sounds like a decent deal for all parties.

Yes, but he is still not finished with NATO.

He is trying to get them all to pay more so he's still going to slap them around some more.

The US could just continue to build Military bases all over Greenland under the guise of it being for NATO, then essentially control all of Greenland, all while Denmark paying for the people of Greenland and not getting the mineral rights.

It is the art of the deal.

He will start with 100% tariffs knowing it's not gonna happen, but if you end up at 50 it's a win. If you start at 50 then you would end up at 30..

They just don't get it..

So this is what puzzles me:

The US will continue to be part of NATO in exchange for all of this.

Sounds like this is a favor to them, and they know it. Why? Because the US protects them from being empaled on poles by savages.

So why wouldn’t they give up Greenland for that alone, to keep the US in the best shape militarily? Unless the other griping is just fake posturing to pretend they have some sort of power.

Sounds like a good deal if there are investors for the minerals.

The rest of the conditions are pretty much status quo but the resource rights are potentially enormous once the initial investments and infrastructure is there.

They all just agreed to get to like 3.5 or 5% in the next decade or so. Not going to reasonably get more than that in a peacetime setting.

Plus, all of the larger NATO nations are ramping things up finally. I’d say Trump already has them on the right track

It’s classic posturing by Euro leftists. The US will now de facto control all of Greenland and not have to pay the people of Greenland.

Trump played them like a fiddle.

This is also probably the first step in Greenland being a US territory.

What are NATO countries going to do when there are even more US military bases all over Greenland. They are going to tell the US to leave lol.

Denmark was a fool to have the EU part of this conversation. They could have got close to a trillion for this.

Yea I saw that but the issue is that they all keep making a promise to pay, then not fulfilling it. They then expect us to make up the shortfall, which we end up doing. That has been one of Trump's consistent complaints about them.

He is the GOAT closer that's for sure.

We may not always like his tactics, but it's effective.

Explain to us in detail, Mickey, how it is 'status quo'

Explain what is 'status quo' about our Greenland access prior to vs after the deal

The policy is to declare yourself the winner of the negotiations no matter what. Even if you didn’t gain anything new.
